Housing affordability matters.
A recent study estimates that government regulations at the federal, state, and local levels account for more than one-quarter of the cost of a newly built home.
Reasonable regulations are important. We need building codes that protect public safety, infrastructure standards that ensure quality development, and environmental protections that are based on sound science and common sense.
At the same time, policymakers should continually review regulations to ensure they are actually serving the public interest and not simply adding unnecessary costs, delays, and barriers to homeownership.
As a City Councilmember, I believe government should focus on protecting public safety and maintaining core services while avoiding unnecessary burdens that make it harder for families to afford a home.
Affordable housing starts with increasing supply, reducing unnecessary obstacles to construction, and making sure regulations are accomplishing their intended purpose.
What are your thoughts?
Government regulations add more than $130,000 to the cost of a newly built single-family home in the United States, according to a new study.
