We love helping our kids and our school!

The Coon Rapids-Bayard Music Department wants to thank the many individuals across the nation, Coon Rapids Municipal Utilities and the Coon Rapids-Bayard Education Foundation for their generous support of donations to the elementary music bag initiative.

The music bag initiative is designed to give each elementary student a bag of instruments for music class. With all the guidance being given to school districts before the opening of the new school year, music educators received guidance from the National Association of Music Educators and the National Federation of State High School Associations' to make sure that students did not share instruments as best as possible; especially instruments that are hard to sanitize and instruments that would not have adequate time to be sanitize between classes. Therefore, creating individual instrument bags for each student was an essential mitigation effort that music teachers can do to provide a safe, fun, and creative music experience for each student. Many music educators across the nation have been building these bags all summer for their students.

Mrs. Fiscus, the K-12 vocal music teacher at CR-B, started working on donations for the project in early June by announcing on social media that she was looking for donations. Some donors bought directly from Amazon and had items shipped, others brought items to her. Actual musical instruments can get expensive quickly so donations for DIY instruments were necessary. Creating "found sound" instruments from a variety of items is more cost effective and gives the students a unique chance at understanding how sound works and how music can be created. This week, after the last of the donations arrived from Amazon, she filled just roughly 220 music bags for Kindergarten through 6th grade students.

Mrs. Fiscus said, "I spent many hours and nights sitting on my living room floor, wrapping yarn balls, stringing jingle bells, taping up plastic eggs, cutting pool noodles and sanding sticks but it was all worth it. Every student will have a bag that is unique because of all the colors of the different items. I can't wait for the students to use their new instrument bags to create music. With an assortment of instruments right at their side, we can get even more creative when it comes to adding sounds to our songs and movements. The ownership the students will have in the creative process is what makes music fun!"

Items donated included yarn, jingle bells, popsicle sticks, plastic bags, plastic eggs, popcorn, dowel rods, frisbees, pool noodles, plastic straws, and tulle. These items turned into egg shakers, drums, drum sticks, jingle bells, sand blocks, guiros and movement props to use while listening to music.

Full List of Donors include: Coon Rapids-Bayard Education Foundation, Coon Rapids Municipal Utilities, Becky H., Anne P., Colleen H., Tammy R., Amanda G., Megan I., Kari W., Rhonda M., Lori M., Brenda F. and Juanita B.
