Cooper State Park South Sulphur and Hopkins County are currently under a burn ban. Fires for cooking are still allowed using ONLY charcoal, propane, containerized fuels. Wood burning fires are prohibited.

TWDB’s Water Weekly: This summer's high temperatures and limited precipitation have taken a toll on the Texas landscape. The latest drought map for conditions as of August 25 shows the largest one-week drought expansion since June 2008. Extra Tidbit for Today: After a wet June, the region entered a dry period. Most locations have seen below-normal rain over the last 30 days (indicated by the yellow to red colors on map). Drought conditions will likely worsen IF we don't see significant rainfall in the weeks ahead. ☔

UPDATED August 20, 2026: The burn ban has been extended for 90-days by Order of the Commissioners’ Court. The burn ban may be rescinded anytime prior to the 90-days period by the County Judge under the advisement of the County Fire Marshal.

Delta County is now under an emergency burn ban for a period of 7-days, effective immediately by order of the County Judge, under the advisement of the County Fire Marshal. The Commissioners Court will review the status of the burn ban at a special meeting of the Commissioners’ Court on Thursday, August 20, 2026 at 9:00 a.m. to determine if the burn ban will need to renewed, extended, or allowed to expire, with respect to the upcoming weather forecasts, fire danger, and drought index. The burn ban may be rescinded prior to the 7-day period by the County Judge, under advisement of the County Fire Marshal, if the conditions that prompted the issuance of the burn ban no longer exist.

Extreme Fire Risk Thursday…

Texas A & M Forest Service has issued a very high to extreme fire risk conditions on Thursday. The combination of bone dry conditions, humidity levels drop below 30%, and winds gusting to 30mph. These conditions can spread grass fires rapidly.

Activities you should avoid during extreme fire risk, especially in North Texas, the big ones are:

Outdoor burning or brush piles
Fireworks
Tossing ci******es or matches outdoors
Outdoor fire pits, campfires, or charcoal grills
Welding, grinding, or other activities that create sparks near dry vegetation
Parking vehicles on tall, dry grass — hot exhaust systems can ignite it
Using spark producing power equipment outdoors when conditions are especially dry/windy
Burning trash or leaves
