In the fire service, sleep is often interrupted, but it remains one of the most critical components of physical and mental health. Today, we are focusing on the vital role sleep plays in cognitive function, reaction time, hormone balance, and overall recovery.

For the Oregonians: Rest is not a luxury or a sign of laziness, it is a physiological necessity. Quality sleep reduces stress, improves mood, and helps your body recover from daily physical demands. Prioritize your downtime tonight so you can be at your best tomorrow.

Today we pause and honor the passing of our Brothers from the East Coast. It has been 19 years since that fatefull day.

Charleston Engine 1 is responding to a report of trees down on a power line at 63050 Crown Point Road. Dispatch is reporting the road is fully blocked. Please stay clear of the area. Power company has been dispatched.

Do not drive over or walk near downed power lines. Treat all downed wires as live and dangerous. Report dangerous conditions to Pacific Power at 1-877-508-5088.

Update:
Engine 1 is on scene reporting the tree is blocking the roadway and confirmed power lines are down.
Confirmed power lines down and a transformer nearby is smoking and a power pole is in fire.

Update #2:
Power crews have shut down the power to the area and removed the downed lines and the tree. Engine 1 will remain on scene to provide traffic control assistance while PP&L replaces the downed section of line. The roadway is currently still closed as the new line is in the roadway. As soon as PP&L gets the line up safely above the roadway, it will be open. PP&L will be on scene for a while finishing the repairs after Engine 1 clears so be careful when driving through that area.
Coos County Road Department is enroute to clear more of the tree from the roadway and along side of it.

If you drove by our main station last Saturday, you would have seen this happening with out ladders. NFPA recommends testing our ladders each year to confirm their safe to use. The red box they sit in the middle of the ladder is over 400lbs.

Charleston Fire & Rescue is beginning to offer CPR classes. We currently have 2 instructors form our career staff. We are seeking 5 Support services volunteers to become CPR instructors for our program. The Fire District will provide the training and help with certification. We ask that each volunteer teach classes on a regular basis. We are seeking to start providing classes on a particular day of the month and then branch out as we build the program. Our volunteers will play a role in building this program and managing it.

If you are interested please email Chief Sneddon at [email protected] and we will set up an appointment for interview and background checks.

We have cancelled the 2026 4th of July pancake feed due to lack of volunteers.
