The aftermath of the flooding last week… thankfully the property fared pretty well (the caboose not so much 😢). I think the beaver activity in the wetlands over the last few years has actually helped with water management 🦫❤️



The caboose was high and dry…

And the depot was safe too…

…and then I looked inside the caboose 😩 We’re in the middle of replacing the roof, and the rain had just poured in around the cupola.

😢 I did my best to protect the original flooring…

And my carpenter rushed out with a tarp as soon as the rain stopped ❤️

Now, all is calm again and the flower meadow is thriving 🌸 …and finishing the roof on the caboose is priority 1!

🎂 150 years ago today, the Red Hook Journal announced the Rhinebeck & Connecticut railroad had completed a new train depot in Copake! Today, it’s the only remaining depot from the R&C that’s still standing in original condition. Here’s hoping I can restore it to last another 150 years!

Hello! As 2025 comes to a close, I wanted to take a moment to reintroduce myself, and say thank you to everyone who’s followed along on my restoration adventures this year.

I’m Stephanie, an Aussie living in the Hudson Valley, NY. Last year I left the tech industry behind to build Old Souls, my historic restoration company focussed on saving unique old buildings. It started with an abandoned 1876 train depot on the brink of collapse (Copake Depot), and then I found a caboose, and a 1920s schoolhouse (Copake Little School).

Thank you to my talented and patient team, and to everyone who’s shared encouragement and advice along the way. Looking forward sharing some exciting updates in 2026!
