It's time to reveal the mystery bird from yesterday's final !

And our bird is........... a Yellow-rumped Warbler (Setophaga coronata)! Did you guess correctly?

These special warblers are some of the only birds that are capable of eating and digesting the waxy berries of bayberries and wax myrtles. To bring these beautiful birds to your yard during migration season provide them with sunflower seeds, raisins, peanut butter, and suet.

It is time for our final !

Our final mystery bird is one that you may be seeing a bit more recently as these birds are making their way to the Southern/Southeastern United States, the Midwest, and Central America from their breeding grounds in Canada. Perched on a tree branch with their wings tucked in, they might look like an ordinary warbler, but once they take flight, or part their wings a bit you'll see the distinct feather coloration on their backs that have given them their name.

These unique birds are pretty versatile when it comes to their diet. They enjoy catching various insects out of the air in impressive aerial stunts, but will not turn their beak away at the occasional berry or nut/seed.

Do you know who this cheeky little friend is? Comment down below and check in tomorrow to see if you guessed correctly!

Seeds from late summer blooms are a huge food source for the millions of birds flying south currently as well as food for the birds that stay here during the winter! Take one more thing off your garden clean up list and don't dead head your flowers, especially your coneflowers and Black-eyed Susans. It may be "unsightly", but you are doing the birds a huge service by leaving the seeds!

Today marks the opening of Deer Hunting season, starting with bow hunting. As part of our continued efforts to restore the forests on our property and create a healthier habitat, deer hunting is permitted on property only with our approval and with the limited tags acquired from us through DEC's Deer Management Assistance Program.

🛑From October 1 through November 15 the northern portion of the property (everything North of Cambridge Rd) including the Blue trail will be closed to hikers.

🛑For your continued enjoyment of our trails and your safety it is recommended that you hike during the day and wear high visibility vests while walking our trails. It is encouraged that your leashed pets where one as well.

🛑Hunters, please make sure you follow guidelines set in place by us and the NY Department of Environmental Conservation.

🛑 Check back in later to see when Rheinstrom Hill will close entirely for deer hunting season.

And our mystery bird from yesterday is.....

A Brown Creeper (Certhia americana)!

These little birds belong to the Tree Creeper family which also includes 8 other bird species spread throughout the Northern Hemisphere and Sub-Saharan Africa.

These birds are occasionally used by wildlife managers to determine the impact logging is having on a habitat.

Join us next week for our last of the season.
