A little piece of Fire Department history in Orangeburg County. In the beginning Tower Acres fire department covered f

ire extinguishment in-between the town of Bolentown and the town of Cope. Tower Acres Fire Department was located on Binnicker Bridge road (Hwy. 70) with dedicated members using buckets of water and garden hoses to extinguish these fires. It was years until tower acres got their first fire truck. Approximately 5 miles south, south east of tower acres on cope road sat the town of Cope Fire Department. Established in 1990 the Cope Fire Department opened their doors with a 1968 LaFrance fire engine the department purchased from the City of Orangeburg. After years of protecting their community from fire and many hours putting fourth work and sweat with in the two different departments the two formed to make one. On the day of December 22, 1997, the tower acres fire department and the town of cope fire department became Cope-Tower Acres Fire Department. With members from both departments united as one served their community’s well. On March 30, 2001, the two departments became a part of the Orangeburg County’s Fire District and the name was changed to Edisto Volunteer Fire Department. Today this fire department serves as the 28th station of Orangeburg County. The primary fire district coverage area is approx. 37 square miles of the southwestern side of Orangeburg County and this does not include the mutual aid departments that surround us. This station houses 2 Engines, 1 Tanker/Tender, 1 Wild-land Unit, 1 Squad Unit and a Service Unit. We are currently made up of about 27 volunteer firefighters and we are always looking for more!
