Members of the Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School’s Fishing Club recently took part in an exciting and educational fly fishing trip to Connetquot River State Park Preserve. Accompanied by Mr. Garcia and Mr. Travis, students had the unique opportunity to experience the sport of fly fishing firsthand while exploring one of Long Island’s most scenic natural environments. The trip was made possible through a partnership with Trout Unlimited, whose members provided guidance and expertise throughout the day.
Students were outfitted with waders, fly rods and lures, and were paired with experienced fly fishing guides who taught them the fundamentals of the sport. A designated section of the Connetquot River was reserved for the group, allowing students to practice their skills as they successfully caught both rainbow and brook trout. The hands-on experience not only introduced students to a new outdoor activity, but also fostered an appreciation for nature, conservation and the local environment.

Highlighting the many award-winning research projects completed throughout the year, Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School hosted its 12th annual Science Research Symposium in the school cafeteria on May 12. Administrators, Board of Education members, local officials, family members and friends gathered to celebrate the students’ hard work, innovation and dedication to scientific research.
Guests participated in a gallery walk showcasing projects across the various levels of the high school’s science research program. Science Chairperson Renee Locker, along with science teachers Tracy Wenzler and Dr. Kaitlyn Thompson, welcomed attendees and recognized both the students’ accomplishments and the continued success of the program.
“This science research program is a true reflection of Copiague High School’s commitment to innovation, academic excellence and student success,” Ms. Locker said. “Thanks to the vision and support of our Board of Education, district leadership and dedicated staff, the program has grown into a nationally recognized STEM hub over the past 16 years. Today, we celebrate not only the achievements of the program, but most importantly, the incredible accomplishments and potential of our students.”
“The Science Symposium is more than a showcase of research projects — it is a celebration of curiosity, perseverance and the pursuit of knowledge,” said Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School Principal Joseph Agosta. “Our students have spent countless hours exploring complex questions and developing creative solutions to real-world challenges, demonstrating the power of understanding and discovery.”
Guest speaker Dr. Miguel Madeira, American Heart Association postdoctoral fellow, also addressed the students, sharing insight about his academic journey. Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School students in Advanced Placement Human Geography classes recently participated in an immersive field study in New York City, gaining firsthand insight into urban development, transportation infrastructure and the cultural landscape of one of the world’s largest metropolitan areas.
The day began with a ride on the Long Island Rail Road into Grand Central Terminal, where students engaged in a reading activity focused on the history of the railroad and terminal. The journey itself served as a foundation for discussions on suburbanization, infrastructure and the critical role public transit plays in shaping urban environments. Students explored Grand Central’s iconic architecture before walking along East 42nd Street, where they observed the 62-story skyscraper SUMMIT One Vanderbilt, a modern landmark exemplifying contemporary design and the evolving skyline.
A highlight of the trip was a visit to the New York Public Library’s Stephen A. Schwarzman Building, where students were welcomed by a cartography specialist in the Lionel Pincus and Princess Firyal Map Division. Through curated historical maps and guided inquiry, students traced the development of Midtown Manhattan, comparing past and present landscapes while analyzing patterns of urban growth, density and land use. They examined maps dating back to the 1660s, offering a unique perspective on the city’s transformation over time.
The visit concluded in the library’s Treasures Room, where students viewed rare and significant artifacts, including a Gutenberg Bible and Thomas Jefferson’s draft of the Declaration of Independence, among other notable works.

Fifth grade students from Copiague School District’s four elementary schools recently participated in an interactive safety presentation hosted by representatives from PSEG Long Island.
Using PSEG’s Mobile Electrical Safety Unit, a three-quarter-scale model of the electric distribution system, students learned important information about electricity, power lines and how to stay safe around electrical equipment. Through a series of engaging demonstrations conducted with the specialized mobile truck, students observed realistic scenarios that illustrated the dangers of electricity and the importance of making safe choices.
Presenters demonstrated what can happen when electrical lines encounter objects, explained how electricity travels and shared safety tips students can use both at home and in the community. The hands-on presentation encouraged participation and helped fifth graders better understand how to respond in emergency situations. The educational program provided students with valuable real-world knowledge while reinforcing important safety practices in an engaging and memorable way.
