Canyon Ranch Elementary Students Participate in Hour of Code

CISD Digital Learning Coaches worked with 3rd to 5th graders at Canyon Ranch Elementary to celebrate the Hour of Code Dec. 6-10. Working with the Canyon Ranch Elementary Librarian Carolyn Davis, Digital Learning Coaches led efforts on robotic learning experiences.

The Hour of Code started as a one-hour introduction to computer science, designed to demystify "code,” to show that anybody can learn the basics and to broaden participation in the field of computer science. It is typically held during national Computer Science Week, which is Dec. 6 to Dec. 12.

Town Center Elementary 5th Graders Support Local Homeless Shelter

Fifth-grade students at Town Center Elementary have participated in several service projects and drives to support The Bridge Homeless Recovery Center this school year. Under the leadership of teacher Marly Natherson, who serves on the Board of the Stewpot Alliance at The Bridge, and her colleagues Renee Foroodi, Rachel Perry and Meredith Schaaf have had their students work together to support those in need. This fall, Town Center 5th graders volunteered their time at recess to make centerpieces for the tables for The Bridge’s Thanksgiving feast by making toilet paper “pumpkins.” Students are also volunteering to make centerpieces for the shelter’s Christmas dinner, which are decorated bags with garland leaves and stars. Each year during Town Center’s annual Holiday from the Heart, which is a schoolwide holiday-themed service-learning project initiative, TCE 5th graders make holiday cards for the clients at the shelter. Spotlight on Authentic Relationships: Message of Thanks for Bus Driver

One person who Sandhya Karthick, an 8th grader at CMS West, is grateful for is her bus driver Kiana Lindsey. Karthick shared a message of “My Thanksgiving — Driving with Kindness” to show her appreciation for her bus driver, who always asks each of her riders, "How was your day?" On her bus, Lindsey knows her students’ names, gives our candy on special occasions, engages with her riders, conducts trivia games and more. Karthick says Lindsey makes her excited to get on the bus and she is grateful to have such a caring and kind bus driver who helps her start and end her day on the right note. Karthick says, “Kiana Lindsey will always be in my heart as the bus driver who lights up my day." CISD's transportation partner, Durham School Services, is looking for more bus drivers like Kiana Lindsey. Those who wish to apply can visit https://careers.nellc.com/jobs/?location=COPPELL. Durham will train drivers to become certified and licensed. This is a great position for retirees or others desiring part-time work.
