Coral Gables has a seat at the table.

Commissioner Melissa Castro has been appointed Chair of the Florida League of Cities Development, Code Compliance, and Redevelopment Committee for 2026–2027.

In this statewide leadership role, Commissioner Castro will work alongside municipal leaders from across Florida to help develop legislative priorities on issues directly affecting our communities, including development, redevelopment, code compliance, property rights, housing, and local decision-making.

This appointment provides another opportunity to bring the perspective and priorities of Coral Gables into important statewide conversations affecting Florida’s cities.

Our Coral Gables police officers show up for this community every single day, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to show them even a small token of appreciation.

A lunch is a simple gesture compared to the commitment, sacrifice, and service they give our residents and our city.

To the men and women of the Coral Gables Police Department: thank you for everything you do. I only wish I could do more.

Behind every siren is a firefighter answering someone’s call on what may be one of the hardest days of their life.

Today, I stopped by Coral Gables Fire Stations 1 and 2 with a little arroz con pollo and a very big thank you.

To the men and women who serve and protect our community every day: we see you, we appreciate you, and we are grateful for you.

And yes… sometimes appreciation comes with arroz con pollo.

People need relief.

Seniors on fixed incomes. Single mothers working every day to make ends meet. Residents who are watching the cost of everything go up.

At our budget hearing, I proposed lowering the millage rate from 5.559 to 5.39, while maintaining the services included in the proposed budget.

A city budget is about numbers but those numbers affect real people.

My proposal: lower the property-tax rate while maintaining city services.

One of my favorite places to be in Coral Gables.

I had such a wonderful time at today’s Western Round Up at our City of Coral Gables Adult Activity Center. This is an event I look forward to almost every year, but what makes it special isn’t just the celebration. It’s the people.

Our Adult Activity Center is such an important part of our community. It’s a place for friendship, laughter, staying active, and simply being together. Every time I’m there, I get the opportunity to sit with residents, catch up, listen to their stories and concerns, and enjoy the community that makes Coral Gables feel like home.

Being a commissioner isn’t only about what happens at City Hall. Some of the most meaningful moments happen right here, spending time with the people I have the privilege of serving.

Thank you to our Community Recreation team and everyone who made today so special. I always leave the AAC with a full heart!

Transparency shouldn’t depend on who is asking the questions.

Since my proposed ordinance addressing developer contributions involving projects coming before the Commission did not move forward, I will continue doing what I believe residents deserve: putting the publicly available facts on the record.

When major development projects come before us, residents should be able to see relevant campaign and PAC contributions, the timing of those contributions, and how each member of the Commission ultimately votes.

No assumptions. No accusations. Just documented information and transparency.

Residents deserve to know who is funding their elected officials and how decisions affecting the future of Coral Gables are being made.

During our Commission meeting, we got a firsthand look at the Coral Gables Police Department’s new SHERP High Water Rescue Vehicle, one of the public safety resources I advocated for in Tallahassee.

The City secured $250,000 in state grant funding through FDLE for a high-water rescue vehicle.

What makes the SHERP so unique is its ability to go where traditional emergency vehicles cannot. It is an amphibious all-terrain vehicle that can travel from land directly into water and move through deep flooding, mud, debris and other difficult terrain. Its large tires provide flotation and propel the vehicle through the water, allowing first responders to reach and evacuate people from areas that may otherwise be inaccessible.

For a South Florida community where severe storms and flooding are realities we have to prepare for, this gives our first responders another important tool when every minute matters.

This is why I go to Tallahassee: to advocate for Coral Gables and bring resources back home that directly benefit our residents.
