Davis Town Meeting House

Davis Town Meeting House The Lester H. Davis House, circa 1750, is located at the junction of Middle Country Road and Coram-Mt. Sinai Road in the hamlet of Coram, New York, 11727.

Home of Davis Town Meeting House Society Inc. Davis House (known as the Davis Town Meeting House until the Town of Brookhaven renamed it in the summer of 2013) is owned by the Town of Brookhaven and is sponsored by the Davis Town Meeting House Society, Inc.; a registered NYS not-for-profit which was formed exclusively for the charitable purpose of maintaining and preserving the Lester H. Davis Hou

se. The Society works directly with the Town of Brookhaven Department of Parks and Recreation as well as the Town Historian on design, maintenance, and fundraising for the restoration and conservation of this wonderful bastion of antiquity that is listed in the National Register of Historical Places and is a designated Brookhaven Town Landmark. By doing so, the Corporation will lessen the financial burden on the Town as well as bring benefit to the residents of the Town of Brookhaven. We are currently in the process of also securing a not-for-profit status with the IRS known as a 501(c)(3). This will permit the Davis Town Meeting House Society, Inc. to in the future offer tax deductible opportunities for donations to be used toward the interior development and future conservancy efforts. Completion of the interior will be a multi-year effort due both to the extensive scope of work as well as to the financial restoration demands. Membership in the Davis Town Meeting House Society is open to everyone throughout the world. The only requirement is an interest in the conservation of this historical landmark. See our website www.DavisTownMeetingHouse.org for full details on the Society and how you can become a member! Mailing address is: PO Box 4, Coram, NY 11727
Physical address is: 263 Middle Country Rd. Coram, NY 11727 (not for mailing purposes)

What an historic day in Port Jefferson as we celebrated the launch of the “Caleb Brewster” whaleboat, a replica built in the Bayles Boat Shop on the harbor. The 3rd NY Regiment 1775 welcomed them ashore after firing the cannon! Happy to see there was a woman aboard. Historian Mark Sternberg gave a rousing background to the event and revealed a newly discovered letter that adds to the Culper Spy story. This 250 commemoration is bringing many local stories to light. Huzzah!

Today we hosted members of the 3rd NY Regiment who enjoyed a tabletop game about Benjamin Tallmadge and the raid at Fort St. George. The game was created by Casey O’Driscoll as a unique America 250 event. We won’t say who won but a good time was had by all.

It was a good day at the Old Baptist Cemetery in Coram as the Graveyard Preservation Group began restoring this important site where 14 patriots of the Revolution are buried. They will be back next Thursday and more volunteers are welcome to help.

The Davis Town Meeting House Society opened our museum today and a great time was had by all. The N.Y. 3rd Regiment was on hand and folks enjoyed reenactments and sewing activities. Our docent-led tours of the ca. 1750 farmhouse as well as the Davis family burial ground were well attended. Special guest Colette Gilbert was delighted to learn about the role that Lester H Davis played in the silk industry on Long Island. She is holding a Davis family needlework picture of a mulberry tree, so important for feeding silkworms. More to discover!
