The Corbin Police Department proudly congratulates Patrolman Katie Piar on graduating from the Kentucky Department of Criminal Justice Training’s Basic Police Officer Training Course class 572.

This academy consists of more than 800 hours of intensive training and is required for all Kentucky law enforcement officers. Graduates receive instruction in criminal law, patrol operations, fi****ms, defensive tactics, investigations, and community policing.

We are proud of Patrolman Piar’s hard work and dedication and look forward to her continued service to the City of Corbin. Please join us in congratulating her on this accomplishment.

On August 26, 2026, Corporal Brown observed a male standing outside of a business in the Corbin area of southern Laurel county. Cpl Brown recognized the male as Jesse Pierce and knew Pierce to have outstanding warrants. As Cpl Brown attempted to make contact with Pierce, he fled through the parking lot and into a heavily wooded and brushy field area. After a brief foot pursuit, Pierce was taken into custody without incident.

Through further investigation Pierce was found to have been recently convicted in a Laurel County District Court case stemming from drug and theft related charges. As a result of the conviction, Pierce was sentenced to home incarceration with an ankle monitor, that Pierce had removed and no longer had in his possession.

Pierce was charged with fleeing or evading police, 2nd degree, on foot and escape 3rd degree for removing the ankle monitor.

In addition, Pierce was served with a laurel county indictment warrant charging possession of a controlled substance, 1st degree, 1st offense (methamphetamine); possession of a controlled substance 1st degree - hydrocodone; drug paraphernalia; and tbut or disposition shoplifting. Pierce was also served with a Laurel County indictment warrant for possession of a handgun by a convicted felon.

Investigation Leads to Arrest Following Report Involving Juveniles

On August 19, 2026, Corporal Brown and PFC Carr responded to the Corbin Walmart in reference to a complaint involving two female juveniles who had been picked up by an unknown adult male subject. The juveniles reported that the male began acting strangely and making statements that caused them to feel uncomfortable.

During the investigation, officers determined that the two female juveniles had met the adult male online through a dating website. The juveniles had been picked up from their residence in Whitley County and were allegedly receiving a ride from the male to a friend’s residence.

The juveniles reported that the male had previously sent them photographs of himself that ultimately were determined not to be photographs of him. During the drive, the male allegedly began making statements that made the minors uncomfortable and began making excuses when they asked him to take them back home. The minors were ultimately able to convince the male to take them to Walmart, where they went inside the store and notified police.

As the investigation continued, officers determined that the adult male had n**e photographs of the two juveniles stored on his cellphone. Officers also determined that the male had offered the juveniles money in exchange for sexual favors.

The male was identified as Baseler Lafrance, of Russell Springs, Kentucky. Lafrance was taken into custody without incident.

Lafrance was charged with Prostitution; Unlawful transaction with a Minor; and Possess Matter S*x Performance o/12

Drug Trafficking Arrest

On August 19, 2026, Corporal Brown observed two male subjects standing beside a business on U.S. 25W in southern Laurel County who appeared to be involved in a drug transaction.

Corporal Brown made contact with the two individuals and recognized one of the males as Walter Owens, whom he knew to have active warrants. Owens was placed under arrest. During the arrest, Corporal Brown observed Owens concealing a brown bag in his hands.

A search of the bag revealed multiple individual plastic baggies consistent with drug trafficking. Owens was also wearing a backpack, which was searched during the investigation. Inside the backpack, officers located a clear zip-top bag containing multiple individually weighed bags of a white crystal-like substance believed to be methamphetamine. Officers also located two loaded syringes containing a clear liquid, buprenorphine strips, and various items of drug paraphernalia.

As a result of the investigation, Owens was charged with:

Trafficking in a Controlled Substance, 1st Degree, 1st Offense — > or = 2 GMs of methamphetamine; Possession of a Controlled Substance, 2nd Degree — Drug Unspecified; & Drug Paraphernalia.

Additionally, Owens was served with two Laurel County District Court bench warrants for Failure to Appear.

Patrolman Austyn Weddle assisted at the scene.

Owens was lodged in the Laurel County Correctional Center.

GOLDEN ALERT

Corbin Police Department is asking for the community’s assistance in locating Madison Cureton, a 19-year-old female.

Madison was last seen on foot in the area of 5th Street in Corbin at approximately 4:45 AM. She was last seen wearing a red shirt and black shorts.

If you have seen Madison or have any information regarding her whereabouts, please contact Corbin Police Department immediately.

Corbin City Police Chief Rusty Hedrick is thrilled to report the promotion of four officers at the Corbin Police Department.

Patrolman Justin Walker, Zachary Johnson, Brentley Patrick, and Jarrett Carr have been promoted to the rank of Patrolman First Class.

These promotions reflect each officer’s dedication, professionalism, and commitment to serving the citizens of Corbin.

Thank you to everyone in our community who came out and supported the Corbin Police Department’s 2nd Annual National Night Out!

We are grateful for the families, children, community members, and local organizations who helped make this event such a great success. Events like National Night Out give our officers an opportunity to connect with the community we proudly serve.

A special thank you to Corbin Walmart, Pepsi Cola Bottling Company of Corbin, Frito Lay, Corbin Arena, Paul Buchanan with Sugar Boogers Bakery, and All About Fun Inflatables for your generous donations and support. Your contributions helped make this event possible.

We would also like to thank the Corbin Fire Department, Whitley County EMS, Whitley-Laurel Emergency Management, Cumberland River Comprehensive Care, Whitley County DCBS, Lynn Camp School Youth Services, City Collector Skye Hedrick, and Whitley County Jailer Jason Wilson for attending and supporting National Night Out.

They are being sought in reference to an incident where property was received from a local store that did not belong to them.
