About Our Department:
The Citizens of the unincorporated community of Cord expressed the need and desire to organize a fire department. The Cord Volunteer Fire Department began organizational procedures during November 1983. Board members were selected and implementation procedures began.
The Department covers an area of about 25 square miles in the northeast portion of the county and provides mutual aid to the surrounding fire departments and the Arkansas Forestry Commission. The Department assists with First Responder and fire calls (structural, vehicle, wildlands, and dilapidated building which can create fire hazards). The major land use in the area is agricultural. Fields are regularly burned off and the danger of one of the fires getting outside the target area is always a fear. Agricultural equipment accidents and fire are also a concern. Approximately 16% of the general population is elderly with many medical concerns. The nearest medical facility is approximately 30 minutes away.
There is a major river in our fire district. The river floods on a regular basis which causes the roads to the east to be impassable. Many vehicles attempt to cross these flooded and fast flowing water covered roads. In the rainy season, the Department has a high percentage of water rescues.
