Every trip matters.

The Crisp County Sheriff’s Office encourages everyone to follow these simple highway-safety reminders:

🔹 BUCKLE UP — EVERY TRIP, EVERY TIME.
Seat belts save lives. Make sure everyone in your vehicle is properly restrained before you pull away.

🔹 SLOW DOWN.
Speeding reduces your reaction time and increases the severity of crashes. Give yourself—and everyone else on the road—a little more time to get where you're going.

🔹 DRIVE SOBER.
If you've been drinking or using impairing substances, don't drive. Have a designated driver, call a friend, or use another safe way home.

🔹 PUT THE PHONE DOWN. 📵
A text, notification, or glance can wait. Your attention belongs on the road.

🔹 PROTECT OUR YOUNGEST PASSENGERS.
Make sure children are riding in the appropriate car seat or booster seat and that restraints are installed and used correctly.

In 1909, John Henry Ward began his term as the second Sheriff of Crisp County after being elected in 1908 on a Democratic ticket. He brought with him prior experience in law enforcement, as he was the son of Douglas County Sheriff Henry Ward. At the age of fourteen, John Henry started working at the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, where he was responsible for keeping records. He was appointed as a Deputy at sixteen and held that position for twelve years. After transitioning from a detective to a bookkeeper, he eventually joined the Bowen Mercantile Company in Cordele. In the fall of 1908, he was elected Sheriff of Crisp County, a position he held for twelve years.

The Crisp County Sheriff’s Office was proud to once again participate in the Lutzie 43 Safe Driving Summit at Crisp County High School. This marks our second year joining students, educators, first responders, and community partners in an effort to deliver one important message:
The choices you make behind the wheel can change your life in seconds.

The Lutzie 43 Foundation was created in memory of Philip Lutzenkirchen, a former Auburn University football player who lost his life as a passenger in a distracted, impaired, and unsafe driving crash in June of 2014. Philip’s number was 43, and his family turned their unimaginable loss into a mission to help save lives by encouraging young people to make safe and responsible decisions on and off the road.

The foundation’s 43 Key Seconds is a simple reminder to take a few moments before putting your vehicle in drive to make sure you and your passengers are prepared for a safe trip.

⏱️ Take 43 Key Seconds:
Clear Head – Ensure you have a clear head – one that is not affected by alcohol, drugs, emotions, or fatigue.

Clear Hands – Ensure you have clear hands- send a text, adjust the radio, and put all devices away so you can drive hands-free.

Clear Eyes – Have clear eyes – set your sights on the road ahead. Do not look to the side at a passenger or at your phone.

Click It – Finally, click your seatbelt. It’s the law and could save your life.

We are grateful to be part of this important program again this year and appreciate the opportunity to speak with our students about the responsibility that comes with getting behind the wheel.

An early-morning accident temporarily closed I-75. A vehicle traveling north on I-75 at mile marker 104 ran into the rear of a DOT truck that was servicing drains on the roadway edge. The driver was taken to Crisp Regional Hospital. Crisp County Sheriff’s Office is working the crash. No other information will be released at this time.

Today, we’re celebrating some very special members of the Crisp County Sheriff’s Office family! 💙🐕‍🦺

Meet Molly, Rowdy, Charlee, and Sally — four pawsome members of the CCSO team! Whether they’re working, training, keeping us company, or just making everyone smile, these four bring something special to our office every day.

From tracking and assisting our deputies to providing plenty of tail wags and unconditional love, our K9s remind us that sometimes the best partners have four legs. 🐾

Today, at the Crisp County Sheriff’s Office we welcomed two deputies into the next chapter of their law enforcement careers.

From Cadet to Deputy

Congratulations to Cadet Hutchinson, who successfully graduated from the Basic Law Enforcement Training Course and was officially sworn in as a Deputy with the Crisp County Sheriff’s Office this morning. We are proud of the hard work, dedication, and commitment it took to reach this milestone. Welcome to the CCSO family, Deputy Hutchinson!

Welcome Back, Deputy Fortson

We are also excited to welcome Deputy Fortson back to law enforcement and back to CCSO! After stepping away from law enforcement, Deputy Fortson made the decision to return to the profession and was officially sworn in this morning.

At approximately 5:30 a.m. on the 22 nd of August, the Crisp County
Sheriff's Office responded to an accident on Interstate 75 at approximately mile marker 94 involving two passenger vehicles traveling south.

The initial investigation indicated that one passenger vehicle rear-ended another vehicle and subsequently veered off the roadway, striking a fence
and tree. A fire began underneath the hood of that vehicle. The driver of the other passenger vehicle witnessed the driver of the vehicle on fire exit the vehicle and run northbound along the roadway. Both drivers were in contact with 911 by telephone.

Upon the arrival of first responders, the Hyundai driver could not be
located. Deputies, firefighters, and other emergency personnel began
searching the area while continuing to investigate the circumstances
surrounding the accident and to extinguish the fire.

During the search, a tractor-trailer stopped in the area after the semi
driver believed he may have struck debris in the roadway. Deputies obtained the driver's information and began gathering additional information concerning the tractor-trailer. First responders continued searching for the driver of the Hyundai.

The driver of the Hyundai was later located approximately 50 yards from the original accident scene. He was treated at the scene by EMS and Fire Rescue personnel and transported to Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital in Albany.
Unfortunately, he later succumbed to his injuries.

The investigation determined that after the initial collision, the driver
had exited his vehicle and told the other driver he was looking for items in his vehicle. The driver then came to the roadway and stood in the right-hand lane, where a tractor-trailer subsequently struck him.

The Crisp County Sheriff's Office is investigating this incident as two
separate accidents, and the investigation remains ongoing.

We want to express our appreciation to the Pasco County Sheriff's Office in Florida for their assistance in examining the tractor-trailer and obtaining
additional valuable information that has assisted investigators in this
case. We are also grateful to all of the deputies, firefighters, EMS
personnel, dispatchers, and other first responders who worked diligently at the scene.

The event is a tragic situation that resulted in the loss of a life. Our
thoughts and prayers are with the victim's family and loved ones during this extremely difficult time. We ask the public to please keep them in their thoughts and prayers as they deal with this heartbreaking loss.

or near Cordele, and is nearly stationary.

HAZARD...60 mph wind gusts and quarter size hail.

SOURCE...Radar indicated.

IMPACT...Hail damage to vehicles is expected. Expect wind damage
to roofs, siding, and trees.

A strong thunderstorm will impact portions of southeastern Sumter and southwestern Crisp Counties through 345 PM EDT
Special Weather Statement issued August 21 at 3:21PM EDT by NWS Peachtree City GA
At 321 PM EDT, a strong thunderstorm was over Lamar, or 12 miles
southeast of Americus, moving southeast at 15 mph.

HAZARD...Up to 40 mph wind, pea sized hail and frequent cloud to
ground lightning.

SOURCE...Radar indicated.

IMPACT...Expect minor damage to tree limbs and blowing around of
light, unsecured objects.

Locations impacted include...
Leslie, De Soto, Desoto, Cobb, Lamar, Fort Early, Georgia Veterans
Memorial St Pk, and Raines.
People outdoors should seek shelter immediately. If you can hear
thunder, you are close enough to be struck by lightning
