Step back in time and explore the historic Transcontinental Railroad grade with a park ranger on the Big Fill Trail.

📍 Meet at the Visitor Center flagpole
🕘 9:00 a.m.
📅 August 25
📅 September 7, 13, 19 and 27
🥾 1.5-mile hike | Approximately 2 hours round trip
💲 Entrance fees apply | No reservations required
👧 Ages 6+ welcome

Please bring water, sunscreen, sunglasses, a wide-brimmed hat, and salty snacks. No shade or facilities are available along the trail.

🌿 Get Outside. Give Back. Explore Golden Spike! 🐦

Celebrate National Public Lands Day with us on Saturday, September 26, and become a citizen scientist for the day!

This year, Golden Spike National Historical Park is offering two ways to volunteer:

🐦 Bird Survey Project
Explore the park’s roads and trails while identifying and recording the birds you see and hear. Your observations will help park staff better understand the birds that call Golden Spike home.

🌱 Plant Survey Project
Head off trail with park staff to identify and record native and invasive plants. We’ll start with a 30-minute training on plant identification and safe off-trail practices before heading into the field.

Your observations will contribute to our understanding of Golden Spike’s unique sagebrush steppe ecosystem and help us care for the park’s natural resources.

National Public Lands Day is the nation’s largest single-day volunteer event for public lands — and it’s a great opportunity to explore your park in a whole new way.

However, treasure hunting, digging, moving rocks, disturbing cultural or natural resources, and entering closed areas are prohibited. Please remain on designated roads and trails and help protect the park’s resources for everyone. The park is not affiliated with or promoting any contests, and no contest items are authorized to be placed on National Park Service property.

Help us tell stories of workers on the Transcontinental Railroad. Golden Spike National Historical Park is partnering with researchers and scholars from Fort Lewis College on an important ethnographic research project, and Help us tell stories of workers on the transcontinental railroad: Golden Spike National Historical Park is partnering with researchers and scholars from Fort Lewis College on an important ethnographic research project, and we need you!

Dr. Rebecca Austin and her team are gathering stories, histories, and cultural connections from descendants of the African American, Chinese, Irish, and Latter-day Saints workers who helped build the Transcontinental Railroad.

This is your chance to help preserve your family’s history and share the vital contributions of these communities in shaping our nation’s history through their efforts in constructing the railroad.

Interviews can be done in person this week and up until June 29 or 30, or by phone, or via video.
