Finally got a chance to get back on this project a little. A big thanks to Layne Lajoy for helping out. We got her power-washed and then started cleaning up the front hull a couple weeks ago and worked on the rear hull today. I was very happy that the vast majority of the work last year held up pretty well. Only had to touch up a couple spots that had previously been partially done.

Did some more work on her Saturday. Mostly spot and surface grinding/sanding on the turret and upper hull. Then spot primed the areas I sanded. A little more of that and she'll be ready for an overall coat of primer. Sorry for the month break on working on her....I was away on vacation for 2 weeks (Alaska), then came back with Covid and was sick for a week and then it rained the following weekend. 😵‍💫

Cleaned up (sanded, grinded, wire brushed) all the rusty areas of the right side lower hull, the roadwheel support arms, shocks, final drive and sprocket wheel. Then applied rust converter and then red primer to all.

Worked on the left side roadwheels, idler and sprocket today and had a little help with sanding and priming some of the hull boxes. My wife Erin also powered washed the walkway around the tank.

Finished the road wheels on the right side and started cleaning up the severely rusted roadwheels on the left side.

Slow but steady progress working alone on her. Right side roadwheels, front idler, and return rollers have been chipped...

Slow but steady progress working alone on her.
Right side roadwheels, front idler, and return rollers have been chipped/grinded/sanded and primered. The middle 4 roadwheels have been jacked and rotated and the rear 4 have had notches cut and grinded into the lip so that water won't build up in them again. I need to still cut the notches in the front 2 roadwheels and idler. It essentially uses up a cutting wheel and a grinding wheel per 1-1/2 notches. Also started masking the wheels so we can paint them. If anyone else wants to help, please apply maskjng/painters tape to the rest of the wheels and all vision blocks on the cupola and drivers hatch.

Got a start on the roadwheels and right sprocket this evening. Removed most of the rusted metal from the rear 4 roadwheels and sprocket and applied Rust Converter paint (black) to what remained. That converts rust to a hard paintable surface. I applied a little green to the sprocket just to see how it would look over the rust converter. I think the sprocket needs a bit more sanding before priming. Grinding, sanding and chipping the rusty roadwheels is the dirtiest part of this job.
In other news, I was just offered a sand blaster this evening that should make cleaning up the rest of the tank MUCH easier! Looking forward to Monday and making more progress. If you are planning on coming to help, please bring a mask (for dust protection) and safety glasses and gloves. And any grinding, sanding power tools you have would also be welcome. I have a few to share though so no problem if you don't.
