Saturday was a special day for the Cornelius community.

The Cornelius Fire Department was honored to join first responders from across Washington County and the Laurelwoods community to celebrate an incredible milestone for 4-year-old Rowan McCain, who recently completed 797 days of treatment and beat leukemia.

After learning that Rowan’s family hoped to celebrate with a first responder drive-by parade, Cornelius Fire Chief David Morris and Cornelius Police Chief Mitch Coley worked together to help bring the idea to life. Agencies from across the county quickly came together to make the celebration memorable for Rowan and his family.

Rowan had the opportunity to explore emergency vehicles, climb inside a fire truck, and meet first responders from several partner agencies, including Washington County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Partain and K9 Trace.

Events like this are a reminder of the strength of community and the importance of supporting families during both difficult and joyful moments. We are grateful to have partnered with the WCSO Cornelius Police Department, Forest Grove Police Department, and the Washington County Sheriff's Office Patrol, Civil, and K9 teams to celebrate Rowan and his family.

Congratulations, Rowan! Your courage and strength inspire us all.

Shortly after 12:30 this afternoon, we responded to a reported fire in a house on N Davis Street. Crews arrived to find that an extinguished fire on a stove top, but before being put out it had began to burn the cabinets and microwave above it.

Firefighters checked to make sure the fire hadn’t spread into the wall and ceiling as well as removed smoke from the house. One occupant was evaluated by AMR Washington County, Oregon for minor smoke inhalation, but didn’t require transport to a hospital.

We had assistance in scene from Forest Grove Fire & Rescue, Hillsboro Fire & Rescue and WCSO Cornelius Police.

Cooking fires are the leading causes of house fires in the United States and they’re preventable. Here are some steps to safely cook in your house.

🥘 - Never leave the kitchen unattended, if you leave turn the burners off.
🥘 - Pay attention to you cooking, if oil starts to boil or items start to smoke, turn the burner off.
🥘 - Have a lid or baking sheet ready to cover your pan in case a fire ignites. This will help extinguish the fire by removing the oxygen.
🥘 - NEVER use water to extinguish a cooking fire, it can cause an explosive reaction with burning oil.

We are glad that no one was seriously injured today and damage was very limited.

Last week, students from Tuality Plains High School visited the Cornelius Fire Department as part of their Career & Technical Education program field trip.

Students toured the fire station, spoke with local firefighters, and learned from Fire Chief Morris about what it takes to serve in the fire service. They also had the opportunity to get hands-on with firefighting tools and learn about Fire Engine 8, which has been in service for approximately one year.
