Corning Joint Fire District The Corning Joint Fire District was established on January 1st, 2020, providing fire and rescue. Chief, Randy Brenning

Prior to the inception of the Corning Joint Fire District, fire protection was provided by three private fire departments- East Corning Fire Department, Village of South Corning Fire Department and the North Corning Fire Department. On January 1st, 2020, the creation of the Corning Joint Fire District merged the three private independent operating fire departments into one Fire Department entity,

operating out of three fire stations, now labeled as:
Station 16 (previously East Corning FD)
Station 34 (previously South Corning FD)
Station 43 (previously North Corning FD)

The Corning Joint Fire District, the Authority Having Jurisdiction, is governed by five fire commissioners who levy a tax onto the Town of Corning and Village of South Corning applicable property owners. Commission Chair, Dave Shaffer

District fire operations are executed by the Board of Fire Commissioners appointed Chief and Deputy Chief. Prior to the formation of the fire district, all three fire departments were operating together under mutual aid agreements and were regularly training together. The purpose for creating the Corning Joint Fire District has multiple points:

1. Improve the fire service for all tax-payers, visitors and commuters in the Town of Corning and Village of South Corning.

2. Eliminate all taxing disparities throughout the Town of Corning and Village of South Corning.

3. Standardize training for firefighters and EMS responders.

4. Standardize Standard Operating Procedures.

5. Standardize and optimize response to emergencies throughout the Town of Corning and Village of South Corning.

6. Standardize apparatus and reducing vehicle maintenance costs through reduction of duplicate or unneeded apparatus and equipment.

7. Increase volunteer staffing quality and availability.

8. Improvement of tax-payers ISO rating.

Training never stops.

This past weekend, members of the Corning Joint Fire District took on two fast-paced days of engine and truck company operations led by Philly Tin Helmet Training LLC. We were also glad to have firefighters from Hammondsport Fire Department and the City of Corning Fire Department join us for the weekend and put in the work alongside our crews.

The instructors challenged us as a team to refine our operations, sharpen our skills, and consider fresh ideas drawn from their own experiences on the job in the City of Philadelphia. I think I can speak for everyone in attendance when I say every ounce of sweat was worth it.

Thank you to Philly Tin Helmet Training, LLC for putting on an excellent two days of training, thank you to Steuben County Emergency Services for allowing us to train with the new burn building and thank you to everyone who came out ready to work, learn, and build their skill sets.

Press Release

Yesterday at 05:57, the Corning Joint Fire District (CJFD) was dispatched for a reported motor vehicle accident involving a vehicle in a ditch. Shortly after dispatch, law enforcement arrived on scene and confirmed that an occupant was entrapped.

Assistant Chief 47-02 responded and, upon receiving the updated report of entrapment, requested an additional crew from the City of Corning Fire Department. Chief 47-01 and Assistant Chief 47-02 arrived on scene, assessed the incident, and began stabilizing the patient and scene.

CJFD Engine 25 arrived at 06:10, followed shortly thereafter by City of Corning Engine 72. Crews worked quickly to extricate the patient, completing the operation in approximately 10 minutes. The patient was then transferred to AMR for medical care.

City of Corning crews were released shortly thereafter, while CJFD personnel remained on scene until the damaged utility pole could be addressed and the vehicle safely removed.

Strong collaboration with our community and mutual aid partners allows us to provide the level of service our residents expect and deserve. Good work to our tireless members responding to our community’s call. We would also like to thank the City of Corning Fire Department for their assistance, AMR for providing patient care, Fleet Pride for vehicle recovery, and NYSEG for addressing the damaged utility pole and helping ensure power was restored for the surrounding community.

We’re excited to be hosting Philly Tin Helmet Training LLC for two days of high-intensity, hands-on training focused on Engine Company Operations and Truck Company Operations.

This progressive, fast-paced course is designed for interior firefighters looking to sharpen their skills, challenge themselves, and learn from instructors who bring years of real-world fireground experience and a passion for developing the next generation of firefighters.

We’re opening 10 remaining seats to our neighboring departments. If you’re looking for quality, realistic training that will make you more effective on the fireground, this is an opportunity you won’t want to miss.

Today, we're proud to introduce the newest addition to our fleet—Squad 16!

Squad 16, a 2026 GMC 3500 equipped with a LEER single rear door cap, is a versatile response vehicle designed to support a wide range of emergencies in our community.

Squad 16 is equipped with:
• BLS first responder medical equipment
• 4 SCBA air packs
• Firefighting hand tools
• Water and ice rescue rope/equipment
• Hurst eDRAULIC combination extrication tool
• Rope rescue equipment

Squad 16 will serve as our first-due apparatus for EMS responses, water and ice rescues, and rope rescue incidents. It will also respond to mutual aid fire calls when additional manpower is requested.

This new unit replaces two aging vehicles—a 2002 Chevy Suburban and a 2006 Ford F550—allowing us to improve reliability while combining capabilities into one modern platform.

The truck was proudly upfitted in-house by our members with a Whelen emergency lighting package and Havis console system. The lighting package features Whelen's exclusive DVI (Dynamic Variable Intensity) technology, which automatically reduces light intensity at night and replaces the harsh, blinding strobe effect with a slow pulsing warning pattern. This technology helps improve safety for motorists traveling through emergency scenes while providing a safer working environment for our firefighters operating along roadways. Vehicle decals were installed by JH-Design.

On Saturday, July 18, at 2:15 p.m., the Corning Joint Fire District, with the City of Corning Fire Department responding on automatic mutual aid, was dispatched to a reported kitchen fire on Bower Place in the Village of South Corning.

Assistant Chief Samuel Polanco was the first officer to arrive, confirming a working fire at 2:17 p.m. Engine 72 from the City of Corning arrived five minutes later and quickly deployed an attack line through the front entrance, advancing to the kitchen where crews rapidly knocked down the main body of fire.

A second alarm was requested at 2:24 p.m. to bring additional personnel to the scene for fire suppression, overhaul, and to check for any extension into other areas of the home. CJFD Engine 25 arrived at 2:27 p.m. and secured a reliable water supply to support ongoing operations. By 2:29 p.m., just eight minutes after the first engine arrived on scene, the bulk of the fire had been extinguished. Additional firefighters from the Big Flats, Painted Post, and Gang Mills Fire Departments assisted with overhaul and ensuring the fire was completely extinguished.

Thanks to the rapid response, coordinated efforts, and aggressive interior fire attack by initial crews, the fire was successfully confined to the kitchen, saving the majority of the home from significant fire damage.

Over the past two weekends, Firefighter Teagan Brown, Lieutenant Jeff Adams, and Deputy Chief Adam Nehring dedicated 32 hours at the fire academy completing the Rope Operations course.

Throughout the class, they learned and demonstrated a wide range of technical rescue skills, including rope ascents, rappelling, building confidence in their harnesses and life safety equipment (hence the inverted picture seen below), constructing raising and lowering systems, understanding mechanical advantage, performing both vertical and horizontal litter (basket) raises and lowers, victim packaging, and safely managing edge transitions.

This training strengthens our department's technical rescue capabilities and ensures our members are prepared to respond safely and effectively when called upon. Congratulations to Teagan, Jeff, and Adam on successfully completing this challenging course and for their continued commitment to serving our community.

On July 16, 2026, they welcomed their beautiful baby boy into the world. We couldn't be happier for the Sherry family as they begin this incredible new chapter together.
