In the mid-19th century, a number of optimists campaigned to have their own county, partitioned off from Steuben. As a sort of consolation prize, a second Steuben County court district was established, with Corning as its seat. A court district needs a court house, and this is it, built in 1854 in the Public Park. Half a century later, rather than pay for repairs and updates on the original building, a new structure was approved. The Drake Company got the contract in 1903, at a bid of $25,000. The new courthouse (no longer used as such) still stands in what we now call Canfield Park, but not on the same footprint as the original, which was demolished.

This is a view down Cedar street from 5th and an early view of the Ecklin house on the right. I believe this is Amory Houghton, son of Alanson and one of his sisters - Not to be confused with Amory “Amo” Houghton JR who would be Amory Houghton’s son. I love how candid this shot is, but it’s the two seater kids toy that is most impressive. This photo is from the Corning Inc. archives. Special shout out to my friend that was so kind to gift me so many of these photos!

A view looking south from the Pine Street Bridge towards the clocktower and the surrounding buildings in the square. You can just barely make out the top of the opera house on the other side of what was then Erie Avenue (now Denison Pkwy).

Another photo of concert hall block: 2-4 E Market St. on the corner of Market and Pine. Currently operating as Quincy Exchange, in the photo you can see it’s the Lincoln Rochester Trust branch in Corning. Looks to me like the top floor is going to be removed soon, and that brackets for the clock have been fixed to the corner of the building.

Fountain plaza in Canfield (courthouse) park. The three structures in the background from left to right are the Hawkes House, The Drake House, and the second iteration of Corning Free Academy on the corner of 3rd and Walnut. The Drakes had three girls, and the Hawkes had a boy and two girls. I’m sure Mrs Drake is behind the camera here.

Corner of Market and Chestnut, looking east. This is a Fourth of July parade down Market Street in 1890. The area where all of the 2 story homes sit on the left side is where the Hawkes Factory was eventually built.

We can't promise any horses (riding OR pulling), but we WILL see most of this Market Street architecture one week from today, in our free guided historic walk on Corning's Southside. Corning has largely been formed by the glass works, the river, and the railroad – all three of them will come into our walk. Meet at 4 PM on Friday, August 2, outside the library entrance, on the ice rink side! No registration is needed.
