Mrs. Corine Maday has dedicated 36 years to education, coaching, mentorship, and student leadership, leaving an incredible legacy at Corning Union High School and throughout the North State community.

Her teaching career began in 1990 at Douglas Junior High School in Woodland, California, where she taught during the 1990–1991 school year. Following that year, she substituted throughout Butte and Tehama Counties during the 1991–1992 school year while also coaching track at Pleasant Valley High School.

In 1992, Mrs. Maday joined the staff at Corning Union High School, where she would spend the next 34 years impacting thousands of students’ lives through teaching, coaching, and leadership.
Throughout her career at CUHS, Mrs. Maday taught a wide variety of courses including Physical Education, Health, Freshman Health, Freshman Issues, Health Topics, Health Science, Nutritional Science, and Exploring Careers. She also collaborated with Marliegh Williams to teach Nutritional Science alongside Foods classes, helping students develop practical life skills and wellness education.
Mrs. Maday’s influence extended far beyond the classroom through her years of coaching and advising student programs. She coached:
Volleyball from 1992–1993, Cheerleading from 1992–1994, Track and Field from 1994–2000, Drill Team from 1992–2005 and again from 2011–2018.

Her impact on the Drill Team program was transformational. During her time as coach, she established many of the traditions and structures that still define the program today. She introduced the practice uniform, established the iconic Red C’s as the team’s signature uniform, preserved longstanding traditions such as the school song and Born to Boogie, and helped elevate the class into an A-G approved course, adding academic depth and legitimacy to the program.

Perhaps even more important than the routines and traditions was the culture she created. Mrs. Maday emphasized leadership, accountability, teamwork, discipline, and character. Former dancers consistently describe her as someone who held high expectations while always supporting her students and genuinely caring about them as people first.

In addition to teaching and coaching, Mrs. Maday served Corning High School in numerous leadership roles. She has served as Department Chair since approximately 2021 and has been an Instructional Coach for the past 10 years. She also played an important role on the district negotiating team from 2012–2023 and helped introduce the concept of “teaming” to CUHS.
Over the years, she has contributed her time and leadership to many committees and support programs including MTSS, PAR (Peer Assistance and Review), School Site Council, the Café Committee, Wellness Committee, Employee Relations Committee, the Absentee Review Committee, and the WASC Team on four separate occasions. She also served as a member of the Tehama County Health and Physical Education Consortium for approximately 10 years, helping support and strengthen health and physical education programs throughout the county.
Mrs. Maday’s dedication and excellence have been recognized through numerous honors and awards throughout her career, including: 1998 Teacher of the Year, 1998 & 2005 Teacher of the Semester, 2004 & 2011 UDA Coaches Leadership Award, 2022 Teacher of the Week, and 2025 Edward Jones Feature Teacher Award.

For 35 years at Corning Union High School, Mrs. Maday has been far more than a teacher or coach — she has been a mentor, role model, leader, and pillar of the school community. Her influence can be seen not only in the success of the programs she led, but in the countless students whose lives she shaped through her guidance, encouragement, and example.

As she retires, Mrs. Maday leaves behind a legacy of excellence, tradition, leadership, and compassion that will continue to impact Corning Union High School for generations to come.

After more than 30 years in education and a lifetime dedicated to serving students, staff, families, and communities across Tehama County and beyond, we congratulate Miguel Barriga on his retirement.

Throughout his career in education, he brought a unique perspective and unwavering dedication to every role he served. Beginning his journey as a paraeducator, he went on to serve as a high school classroom teacher for 17 years, an associate principal for 9 years, and a principal at both the high school and elementary levels. His experience across all levels of education helped shape his understanding of the educational landscape and his commitment to fostering inclusive and equitable opportunities for all students.

While his time with our district may have been brief, his impact throughout his career has been far-reaching. Through his compassion and commitment to education, he has positively influenced countless lives and helped shape the future for generations of students.

We are grateful for his years of service and we wish him nothing but happiness, relaxation, and fulfillment in this well-earned retirement.

Thank you for making a difference for more than three decades!
