Augustus Saint-Gaudens (1848-1907) was an artist who helped shape a distinctly American school of sculpture and, in turn, influence how Americans view their country, its past, and the United States’ place in the world. Born in Ireland, Saint-Gaudens emigrated to the United States with his family as an infant. He first learned to create delicate portraits as a teenage jewelry apprentice in New York City and moved to Europe to study sculpture at age 18. Soon, he brought lifelike emotion and dramatic detail to American subjects. In 1885, he began summering in Cornish, NH with his family and moved there year-round in 1900 until his death in 1907. Notable works include the Shaw/54th Regiment Memorial in Boston, the Standing Lincoln in Chicago, and the Double Eagle gold coin. When can I visit? Park buildings are open from Memorial Day weekend to October 31. A fee is collected to enter the park during this period. Park grounds, trails, and outdoor sculptures remain open during daylight hours throughout the year. Please use caution as walkways, trails, and grounds are not maintained for public use between November 1 and Memorial Day weekend and may be icy, snow-covered, or uneven. Who cares for the park?
