Let's explore the history of Silver Strand State Beach!

Over time, the 14-mile-long San Diego Bay has been reshaped for human use. During World War II, the U.S. Navy took over dredging operations to deepen the channel for homeported vessels and other military purposes. Millions of tons of sand were dredged from the bay and deposited along both sides of the highway, widening the once narrow sandspit. The coastal strand and dunes were affected but have since recovered.

A rare plant emerges on the bayside

By the 1990's, much of the bayside at Silver Strand State Beach was covered with thick mats of invasive sea fig (Carpobrotus edulis), a succulent plant native to South Africa. After the sea fig was pulled in the early 2000's, seeds of native dune plants began growing in the sand, after years spent dormant underneath the sea fig. Since then, a flora rich in sensitive plant species has emerged.

One such discovery was Brand's phacelia (Phacelia stellaris), an annual plant in the borage family with deeply lobed leaves and bell-shaped pale violet flowers that often grows to be a few centimeters tall. This was an exciting find because Brand's phacelia is rare, currently located in just twelve occurrences (seven in the United States and five in Mexico). The species is categorized by the California Native Plant Society as rare, threatened, or endangered in California and elsewhere, and seriously endangered in California.

Sanderlings are extraordinary migrants. Breeding adults will fly thousands of miles to the Artic breeding grounds in the summer. Some will migrate from as far south as Chile all the way to the Arctic in the summer. Non-breeding adults may choose to save energy and stay in their winter coastal areas all year long.

They can be found skittering across coastal beaches all over the world probing the sand for sand crabs and other crustaceans, and then retreating as a wave advances. Come see these magnificent little birds at the Silver Strand State Beach this winter.
