Have you ever wondered how Crecy Street on Naval Air Station Corpus Christi got its name?
Situated in front of the former Corpus Christi Army Depot headquarters, this street honored a local hero and legendary World War II Soldier.
Named after the 29th president of the United States, Warren Gamaliel Harding Crecy was born in Corpus Christi, Texas, on Jan. 4, 1923. He graduated from Solomon M. Coles High School in downtown Corpus Christi in 1941, just before the nation entered the war.
On April 12, 1942, Crecy enlisted in the U.S. Army at Fort Sam Houston. Following recruit training, he was assigned to the historic 761st Tank Battalion, the famed "Black Panthers.
Following World War II, Crecy remained in Germany, where his assignments included serving as a prison officer during the historic Nuremberg trials. He eventually reached the rank of major.
Today, Maj. Crecy rests in Arlington National Cemetery, but his legacy remains permanently etched into the history of his hometown. Next time you drive down Crecy Street, take a moment to remember the Corpus Christi native who fought with unmatched bravery for our freedom.
