After experiencing a tropical storm or hurricane, it’s important to ensure your safety first and foremost. Once it's safe to do so, take the time to carefully document any property damage.

What should you do?
• Take clear photos of all damaged areas, both inside and outside your home.
• Photograph any personal belongings that were affected.
• Contact your insurance company to report the damage and begin the claims process. Submit photos and descriptions of what your property looked like before and after the storm.

If a tropical storm or hurricane threatens our area, do not walk or play in flood waters after the storm. Flood water may contain dangerous pathogens or chemicals that can cause illnesses. There could also be debris, waste, and wildlife.

Underground or downed power lines can also electrically charge the water, making it unsafe for you and your family.

Hot temperatures and high humidity will increase the risk of heat-related illnesses this afternoon as heat indices peak between 108-112°F and can persist longer than 2 hours. The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for Thursday, July 13, from 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. for the Coastal Plains.

Stay hydrated, limit strenuous time outdoors, take frequent breaks if working outside, wear light-colored clothing, check on those most vulnerable to heat, and never leave people or pets inside a vehicle.

As a reminder, our Corpus Christi Public Libraries and Senior Centers are available during their regular operating hours to seek shelter from the heat.

If water has entered your home, please be cautious and avoid touching any electrical equipment if it is wet or if you are standing in water.

If you witness downed wires, downed poles, or trees that have fallen on power lines, please call AEP Texas at 866-223-8508. Do not touch or go near them.

• Wear protective clothing and face coverings or masks.
• Work with others. Never alone.
• People with respiratory health conditions or immune suppression should avoid entering buildings with visible mold growth or indoor water leaks.
• Keep children away from disaster cleanup work to ensure their safety.
