Texas GOP Sen. Ted Cruz and Arizona GOP Rep. Eli Crane launched an effort this week to support a petition that would mandate proof of U.S. citizenship when registering to vote in federal elections.

This announcement comes days after Texas State Secretary Jane Nelson announced earlier this week that the state identified 2,700 registered voters who are not American citizens.

Texas Completes Citizenship Verification of Voter Rolls

The Texas Secretary of State’s office has completed a statewide comparison of the voter registration list against the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services’ SAVE database. This marks the first time Texas has been able to access this federal data directly and at no cost, thanks to a recent policy change.

Out of more than 18 million registered voters, 2,724 potential noncitizens were identified. Those records have been sent to county officials, who are now responsible for verifying each case. Individuals who receive a notice will have 30 days to provide proof of citizenship to remain registered. If a registration is canceled in error, it can be reinstated immediately with documentation.

Secretary of State Jane Nelson emphasized that the goal of this process is to ensure that “only eligible United States citizens may participate in our elections” while protecting every voter’s right to cast a ballot.
