Huge thanks to the sheriff's office for highlighting water safety and including Cortez Aquatics! π Drowning prevention starts with awareness. Give their post a read to keep your family safe around water! πββοΈ
July 25 is World Drowning Prevention Day.
Here in Montezuma County, we're fortunate to have plenty of opportunities to enjoy the water, from our local lakes to community pools. Whether you're swimming, boating, fishing, or just cooling off, water safety should always come first.
One of the best ways to prevent drowning is by learning to swim.
The City of Cortez Municipal Outdoor Pool continues to make water safety a priority by offering swim lessons throughout the summer, and they even introduced a new adult swim class this year. They've also launched a new Lifeguard Cadet Camp, helping inspire and prepare the next generation of water safety leaders. During the winter months, the Cortez Recreation Center offers swim lessons and various water events year-round as well.
While this summer's outdoor swim lesson season has wrapped up, we encourage everyone to follow the City of Cortez Municipal Outdoor Pool page for announcements about next year's lesson registration and other aquatic programs, and to follow the Cortez Recreation Center page for updates on any upcoming lessons and aquatic events.
No matter where you're enjoying the water this summer, remember these simple safety tips:
π§ Never swim alone.
π Always supervise children around water.
π¦Ί Wear a life jacket when appropriate.
π± Keep distractions to a minimum when watching swimmers.
π« Never swim or operate a boat under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
A few simple precautions can save a life. Have fun, stay safe, and help make this a drowning-free summer.
