🚨 Saturday our crew was on patrol when they were diverted to assist a 21-foot vessel about 30 nautical miles west of Egmont Key that was taking on water after a good Samaritan had reported the boat in distress.

Our boat crew located the vessel as it was making its way toward shore. Two crew members were sent over with a dewatering pump to help remove water from the bilge.

Once the water was cleared, the issue was traced to a livewell pipe that was pumping water into the bilge. The pipe was secured, and our crew escorted the vessel safely back to the boat ramp with assistance from Eckerd College’s rescue boat. 🚤

🚨 U.S. Coast Guard stops illegal charter operation near Anna Maria Island

A U.S. Coast Guard Station Cortez law enforcement crew terminated an illegal charter operating on the Intracoastal Waterway near Anna Maria Island, Thursday.

After investigating, the law enforcement team deemed the 24-foot boat to be operating as an illegal small passenger vessel, terminated the charter’s voyage, and escorted the nine passengers and boat back to Coquina North Boat Ramp.

The violations include:

💢Violation of 46 C.F.R. 176.100 (a) – failure to have a valid Certificate of Inspection.

💢Violation of 46 C.F.R. 180.71 – for failure to have sufficient life jackets on board.

“Anyone paying for a trip on a traditional passenger vessel should ask to see the Merchant Mariner Credential of the boat operator to verify their captain is properly licensed by the Coast Guard,” said Brian Knapp, chief of investigations at U.S. Coast Guard Sector St Petersburg. “If the captain can’t produce their license, do not get on the boat.”

The Coast Guard received a report of a dispute between an alleged Coast Guard credentialed mariner and another boater in the U.S. Coast Guard Sector St Petersburg area of operations. The Coast Guard is investigating the incident.

The Coast Guard has authority and jurisdiction over merchant mariner credentials. Enforcement actions for violations can range from civil penalties to suspension or revocation of a merchant mariner credential. We also work with our state and local law enforcement partners regarding incidents between U.S. citizens if there is a nexus to non-federal charges.

As a reminder, social media is not an appropriate reporting method for marine incidents or distress. The Coast Guard Investigative Service (CGIS) Tips is a web-based and mobile means to report anonymously to CGIS about criminal incidents. In an emergency, please contact the USCG on VHF radio channel 16 or dial 911

This past weekend, Station Cortez, alongside a NOAA officer, conducted fisheries boardings on commercial shrimp vessels. Our mission is to educate mariners, enforce applicable laws, and ensure compliance with regulations that protect our marine resources.

By maintaining a strong presence on the waterways, we support sustainable fishing practices and promote safety for all who work and navigate these waters.

Thank you to our partners at NOAA and the hardworking commercial shrimpers for their cooperation! 🐟
