The 2/17/2026 Cortland Common Council meeting began with public comments criticizing the city government for its treatment of minority residents, the deaths of two unhoused women from exposure and dangerous Main Street intersection where a resident was hit and killed.
New finance director Chuck Schager then reported tentatively finding a $2.5 M shortfall in last year's revenues. Council members thanked the DPW for keeping streets clear during the recent cold and snow. They also cheered the opening of the Rural Health Initiative (RHI) Pendleton Street Grace Space which provides a warm haven for people five days a week with showers, laundry, cell phone charging and coffee.
