Throwback Thursday: Then & Now!

In the side-view mirror, we have our 1978 Plymouth Volare Police Cruiser. From chrome and carburetors to computers and cruisers packed with technology, the evolution of the police car is pretty amazing.

Fast-forward to today, and patrol vehicles have come a long way. Modern cruisers are equipped with advanced technology, improved safety features, computers, cameras, and plenty of tools to help officers do their jobs.

But here’s the really cool part: the two photos of the patrol car—then and today—were taken at the exact same spot on campus! Different cruiser. Different era. Different technology. Same campus. Same mission.

Please join us in congratulating UPD Officers Sulaiman, MacDowall, Clarke-Wells, Smith, and Divirgilio, who, alongside other local law enforcement officers and first responders, successfully completed Crisis Intervention Team (C.I.T.) training and certification last week.

C.I.T. training provides officers with valuable knowledge and skills to better respond to individuals experiencing a mental health or emotional crisis in a variety of situations throughout our community. This training helps officers recognize and de-escalate crisis situations while providing appropriate mental health intervention for individuals who may require emergency care.

We would also like to extend our sincere thanks to the City of Cortland Police Department for hosting this important training alongside the Cortland County Mental Health Department.

It is our goal to achieve and maintain a department with 100% of our staff C.I.T. certified. We believe this crucial training is an important part of providing compassionate, professional, and effective service to everyone in our community.

Summer may bring a change of pace, but also gives us valuable opportunities to connect with the people we proudly serve.

Over the past few weeks, we’ve enjoyed spending a lot of time out in our community. From collaborating with our Cortland EOP for a fun Friday night together, to sharing K-9 demonstrations with our local schools, to celebrating with residents and our neighboring agencies during National Night Out on the Homer Village Green- we are grateful for every summer moment and connection.
