Tobacco Free Zone of Cortland, Tompkins & Chenango Tobacco use remains the single most preventable cause of death in the United States, accounting for more than 480,000 deaths each year.

Tobacco Free Zone of Cortland, Tompkins & Chenango Counties, including Reality Check (youth-engagement component), is dedicated to reducing burden of tobacco in our communities. The Tobacco Free Zone of Cortland, Tompkins & Chenango Counties (including the youth engagement component Reality Check) is a program based at the Cortland County Health Department, and is funded by the New York State Depa

rtment of Health's Bureau of Tobacco Control. The Tobacco Free Zone engages in community education and advocacy dedicated to keep the air smoke-free, support smokers who want to quit, and help teens beat the tobacco trap, because we cannot afford another generation of tobacco addiction. An estimated 41,000 of these tobacco-related deaths are the result of secondhand smoke exposure. More deaths are caused each year by tobacco use than by all deaths from HIV/AIDS, illegal drug use, alcohol use, motor vehicle injuries, suicides, and murders combined. The total economic cost of smoking is more than $300 billion a year.

TCWH is hiring: Health Educator (Advancing To***co-Free Communities grant / JUUL Settlement funding)

Under the ATFC grant, the Health Educator role works with Cortland and Chenango counties to continue the initiatives that To***co Free Tompkins has developed for over 25 years. To***co Free Zone of Cortland, Tompkins & Chenango

The ideal candidate will be innovative and committed to further developing comprehensive to***co control efforts that include public education campaigns, youth engagement, retail and marketing restrictions, and proven policy strategies that are essential to counter the influence of to***co industry marketing and reinforce consistent smoke-free norms.

The Health Educator will also coordinate the implementation of JUUL Settlement funds in Tompkins County. Interventions will be focused on:
1) public awareness campaigns to prevent youth va**ng (e-cigarette use) and promote penalties for sales to minors and regulations for businesses that sell v**e products,
2) evidence-based to***co training for professionals who work with youth,
3) evidence-based youth va**ng cessation programs,
and 4) conduct surveillance on youth va**ng and v**e products.

Youth va**ng continues to be a concern in Tompkins County with 22% of 12th graders reporting ni****ne v**e use in their lifetime. The funding will be used to remediate the harm caused by va**ng and prevent future initiation.

This is a full-time, benefits-eligible position at 35 hours per week, with a Hire Rate of $31.48 per hour and a Work Rate of $34.13 per hour after nine months of continuous employment. This is a HELP approved title. No exam is required.
