The Cortland Fire Department was originally formed in 1885 and was known as The Cortland Volunteer Fire Company. At this time the department was responsible for most of the northern half of Trumbull County. In 1961 the fire department became known as the Cortland-East Bazetta Fire Department. The fire department still stands where it was originally built, but in 1976 a second station was built on
McClearly-Jacoby Road. In 1979 the Cortland Fire Department received their first ambulance which was purchased and donated to the fire department by the Cortland Lions Club. In January, 1995, the fire department became known as the Cortland City Fire Department. The Cortland City Fire Department currently operates out of their Lattin Street station, responding to nearly 2300 emergencies each year. The full time daily staff of three IAFF Firefighter / Paramedics and one part-time employee. The department currently operates a 1998 Pierce 75' Ladder Truck and a 2020 Sutphen Fire Engine. Both vehicles carry specialized equipment to respond to all types of fires, auto accidents, and rescues within Cortland City and our neighboring communities. With over 90% of all emergencies being medical related, prompt and aggressive care is our focus. The Cortland City Fire Department currently operates two ALS Squads and one ALS support unit. These units, staffed with paramedics and EMTs, provide the residents of Cortland City, and surrounding communities, with the highest level of pre-hospital care available. The Cortland City Fire Department currently transports to all Warren hospitals, as well, Youngstown and Western Pennsylvanian facilities on occasion. This allows us to provide more critical patients with specialized care at certain facilities. Cortland City Fire Department operates under an very advanced and aggressive medical protocol through University Hospitals. Our department is also proud to provide our community with a proactive fire prevention program in our schools and business. Routine fire inspections and preplanning help prepare our department for future emergencies. The Cortland City Fire Department is also home to a State Accredited EMS Continuing Education Training Center. This center is utilized by EMT's and paramedics from around the area to refresh and review skills and medical concepts.
