With the summer baby season influx of patients also comes the best part of our job, patient releases! These three American kestrels were found as orphaned fledglings, and after over a month in care, have grown into juveniles that are ready to be in their native habitat! One of the last steps of ensuring that the kestrels can survive on their own is a prey test, which demonstrates that each kestrel can hunt a live prey item (in their case, mice) successfully on their own. We want to be sure prior to release that each animal has the best chance to survive where they belong!

Joining us at this release was one of the winning Raptor Release groups from last year's Wild Night Out auction! Interested in bidding on this item at this year's Wild Night Out? Tickets are on sale below for Wild Night Out 2026, which will be held on September 20th!

Thanks to for taking video of these kestrels! As you can see, they moved very quickly, ready to head home!

The support of our community makes Chintimini Wildlife Center soar, and on Sunday, September 20th, we invite you to flock together for Willamette Valley wildlife at Wild Night Out!

Wild Night Out will be held at the OSU Alumni Center from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm, featuring a live and silent auction, visits from raptor ambassadors including American Kestrel Penny as well as many reptile and invertebrate ambassadors.

Chat with our staff rehabilitators and get your wildest wildlife questions answered, like "How many skunks did you smell this year?" or "How many gallons of blueberries did the patients eat this summer?" and so many more!

Dinner will be by Honeybrine Catering, cider by 2 Towns Ciderhouse, wine by local Oregon wineries, and of course, delicious dessert that you may have to "dash" to get!

Tickets are $85, link to purchase below, and will increase to $90 on September 14th! Last year we sold out, so don't delay in securing your spot! If you purchase a table, reminder that you get a special token of our appreciation and priority dining!

We would also like to shout out event sponsors Cambern Homes, Witt Consulting, and Philomath Healing Motion Physical Therapy! If you own a business and are interested in sponsoring this event, reach out to [email protected] to see the benefits of partnering with us!

We can't wait for you to join us at this unforgettable evening supporting wildlife conservation!

It's Owl Awareness Day! From our two ambassador owls, Bo the Barn Owl and Ruth the Great Horned Owl, to our many owl patients (42 in 2026 so far!) we appreciate owls big and small!

Owls are often very aware of us as well, like the juvenile Great horned owl patient from earlier this year, displaying a behavior known as "mantling". This is a strategy that raptors have evolved to make themselves appear bigger in the face of a perceived threat. In the case of this patient, the threat is humans in their space! We work hard to minimize the stress that healing patients receive in our care, but this behavior, especially in a patient who is about to return to the wild, is a great sign! We also work very hard to not adapt patients to humans or human care–and as this owl is showing, they would like humans to go away very quickly!

Owls and other raptors will also exhibit mantling behavior in order to shield prey items that they have caught from other predators! Happy Owl Awareness Day! 🦉
