Halloween is near and we would like to address the issue of cultural appropriation. Cultural costumes found during this time of year often depict and reinforce negative stereotypes of individuals within a culture. Inform yourself before you decide to put on a costume that might offend others.

Visit our recent post on our website to read more about cultural appropriation vs. cultural appreciation: http://dce.oregonstate.edu/events-stories

Diversity & Cultural Engagement - Oregon State University

Dear Friends,

It is with a heavy heart that we share this message. Our friend, mentor, colleague, elder, witness, storyteller, and joyful comrade in this struggle for justice, Oscar Humberto Montemayor is passing on. During the last three decades, Oscar has served the Oregon State University community faithfully and diligently from his work with the College Assistance Migrant Program to more recently serving as the Associate Director for Academic Success with DCE. He was loved, respected, and cherished by all who met him. In service of his vision to "get to know one another" as he used to say, we encourage deep reflection over his life for all it meant, for the barriers he knocked down, and to the change he made in the lives of students, faculty, staff, and his entire community.

We encourage students, faculty, and staff to join us for a space of sharing, storytelling, and memory at the Centro Cultural Cesar Chavez from 11 am until 1 pm tomorrow, Friday, October 21. Oscar touched many lives and we encourage all who felt his warm presence to share in a Celebration of Life on October 31 at 1 pm in Reser Stadium.

In this time of devastating loss we ask that you be in community in the many ways Oscar taught us to be in a beloved, humble community.

In Profound Grief,
The DCE Family

Oregon State University community members reported Wednesday the presence of a number of Islamophobic chalkings in several locations on OSU’s Corvallis campus. These messages are located in public outdoor spaces that by university policy are considered free speech areas. Oregon State strongly supports the right to free speech, but it opposes messages that seek to threaten individuals based on their faith, nationality or immigration status. Such messages are inconsistent with the values of our university and our commitment to provide a safe and inclusive learning environment.

We recognize that the harm created by these messages is real and we have a responsibility to lift each other up. Reach out to classmates, teachers and coworkers who may be impacted by this incident or others like it to let them know that you care and that you support. Check in with each other and stay connected. And if you are able, speak out against hate when you see it or hear it, call out divisiveness, have hard conversations and promote understanding.

For students, if you need someone to talk to, we encourage you to reach out to Oregon State University- Diversity & Cultural Engagement, the Office of Student Life, International Programs and Services, Counseling and Psychological Services - CAPS at Oregon State University. Faculty and staff should feel free to contact the Office of Institutional Diversity or Employee Assistance Program (EAP) for support.

Meanwhile, Oregon State will remain a robust community that is made stronger by the diversity of our backgrounds, perspectives and beliefs. We will reject hate in all forms, and refuse to be divided by messages left on sidewalks in the middle of the night. The Oregon State community will unapologetically continue in its work to create a diverse, equitable, inclusive and safe community.

Dear OSU campus or community member,

We invite you to join us, the OSU campus and local community, to imagine what it would look like if in 2036 full inclusion and belonging were manifested at OSU.

On May 17 from 4:00 pm - 7:00 pm in the MU Horizon Room, together we will imagine our future in 20 years.

The Imagining will be an experiential gathering directed toward challenging paradigms, building hope, and dreaming a future grounded in the power of collective creativity. The hope is that people coming to this gathering will start and finish the process together to engage in the results of our collective harvest. It’s a one of a kind experience - be there for the final group shot!

This event will be a mashup of art making, storytelling, prototyping, dialogue, and play.

This is an act of collective imagination, add yours.

Be sure to RSVP here (dinner will be provided to those who sign-up by May 12). This event is free and open to the public. Support and share through Facebook.

Hosted by Diversity & Cultural Engagement and in community with USDAC Imaginings around the nation.
