-------------------------------------------------------
Starting a pod may lead to some awkward conversations, but having the difficult “ground rules” conversation in advance helps make sure that everyone in the pod is on the same page about safety.

Whatever your ground rules, make sure you and your pod members are on the same page.
• Decide what activities or interactions are okay among pod members, and what’s off-limits. Choose people who you know will be honest about their experiences.
• Choose what activities or interactions among non-pod members are okay, and what’s off-limits.
• Consider what to do if a member goes against the pod agreement.

DYK there are 102 bridges and large culverts in Benton County?

After the Oregon Department of Transportation inspects each bridge and analyzes data, they determine the road rating and condition of each bridge. If the integrity of the bridge is less than acceptable, a “weight limit” is placed on the bridge. Any time a weight limit is required by ODOT, county public works takes the request to the Board of Commissioners for review and approval. #BentonCoGovDepts

If you, your roommates, or your household decide you want to join or create a pod, there’s a few things to keep in mind.
• Choose people who you know will be honest about their experiences.
• Keep your pod size small. Pods of 2-3 households or 5-10 people are best.
• In general, try to choose couples, roommates or households with low risk of complications from COVID-19.
• Keep your pod safe by choosing pod members who are taking extra precautions to minimize exposure to COVID-19 outside of the pod.

Si usted, sus compañeros/as de cuarto o su hogar, deciden unirse o crear un grupo, hay algunas cosas que debe tener en cuenta.

When will ranked choice contest results for County Commissioner be updated AFTER election night?

We will update the results after the 14-day challenge period has passed and all accepted ballots have been tallied. If a nominated or write-in candidate receives more than half of the first-choice votes cast (50% + plus one), that candidate may be announced the unofficial winner prior to certification. The official winner will only be declared when the results are certified.

How many times have we gone to bed on election night thinking a particular candidate or ballot measure was winning in a close race, only to find after all ballots are counted that the outcome had changed?

Ranked Choice Voting results are no different. If the race is close, final determination will depend on the counting of ballots returned in another Oregon county and the count of any challenged and provisional ballots being included in the final contest results.

Quarantine pods are small social groups, usually made up of 5-10 people or 2-3 households, who agree to get together socially with only each other, and limit or restrict all physical contact with people outside of the pod.

Pods allow people to spend time together with less need for physical distancing, as long as outside the pod they closely follow the recommended COVID-19 prevention guidelines, like face coverings and physical distancing.

What County Commissioner contest results will we see ON election night?

The Election Office will release ONLY the first choice ranking results for County Commissioner after 8:00 pm on election night. These unofficial first choice ranking results will be updated along with the other contest results, including the final Unofficial Election Night results. We cannot announce a tentative winner until all votes are tallied, including Benton County ballots returned in other Oregon counties and those resolved during the 14-day ballot challenge/resolution period. Following the challenge period, the county must certify the election results no later than the 20th day after the election date.

If the race is not close, we may have a good idea who likely won on election night. This is not a big difference compared to previous elections.

Benton County is actively recruiting membership for the newly created Environment and Natural Resources Advisory Committee (ENRAC).

ENRAC will address many of the issues that the County’s Environmental Issues Advisory Committee (EIAC) addressed in the past. Specifically, the Committee will research topics and provide input to the Board of Commissioners and County Departments in areas related to Benton County’s 2040 Vision Statement: “To protect, conserve, and enhance our treasured, limited natural resources and prepare for future environmental challenges.”

All County committees and advisory boards provide residents the opportunity to serve our community and provide input to government decisions. Further, Benton County is committed to equity and diversity, and continues to work with and be inclusive to underrepresented individuals. We believe these communities must be centered in the work we do. We strongly encourage people with lived experiences, people of color, and/or racially diverse backgrounds to apply.

If you are interested, please submit an application to: http://ow.ly/UXJD50BY7SN by Friday, October 30.

How are ranked choice ballots counted?

To win a ranked choice election, a candidate must receive 50%, plus one vote of total votes cast for that office. After all the votes are in, counters will tally first choice votes. If no candidate wins by receiving 50% plus one majority of the total “first choice” votes cast, the candidate with the lowest number of first choice votes is eliminated, and the “second choice” candidate votes on those ballots are tallied.

Votes are recalculated, and if one candidate achieves a 50% plus one majority, they are declared the winner. If not, we repeat the process. The candidate in last-place is eliminated and the “third choice” candidate votes on those ballots are tallied. If the third choice on those ballots has already been eliminated, the subsequent choice is counted, and so on until the ballot is exhausted or a winner has been determined. The process is repeated until one candidate reaches a 50% plus one majority and is declared the winner.

Thank you to all our first responders and emergency management teams for keeping our communities safe and prepared. There is a free Emergency Management/Preparedness app on the App Store. Its called the Emergency Ready App and can be downloaded for free at https://emergencyreadyapp.com/. It’s a great tool that allows people to customize their specific emergency kits and emergency response plans so they can prepare for the unforeseen. It also comes with built in features like pre-loaded emergency kit tools and plans. I thought this may be an excellent tool for folks in our community in addition to what our Emergency Management Team already has in place. Thanks again for all you do and continue to support our men and women in blue.

When is Benton county going to get a new jail.
Hi
I was abused at Benton county jail in Corvallis....a spent 14 hours in a freezing jail cell with out a bed mat or a blanket....it was so cold that I could see my breath....
A new replacement CPI utility pole on the NW corner of 53rd and Reservoir is blocking the crossing signal when viewed from the crossing button on the SW corner. The signal can be viewed, but only from a small portion of the SW corner sidewalk and not where people would generally find themselves if pushing the button to cross. Not sure if the replacement is larger than the old pole or is in a slightly different location.
