11/17/2020

Benton County 4-H Members, Leaders and Families,
Our Extension Director has ordered all in person Extension programming in Oregon to stop, effective immediately. This OSU Extension requirement is more restrictive than the Governor’s statewide 2-week freeze, in that it stops all in person programming immediately.

If you have any in-person programming planned currently through Dec. 2, you’ll need to move it to a virtual platform, postpone or cancel it. We understand that this is disappointing news as a handful of clubs have planned in-person programming, when it could not be provided virtually.

Our Extension office will also be closed 11/18-12/2, but still available by phone and e-mail. Thank you for your cooperation. We will be sure to keep you informed with any updates. Take care!

Do you have an interest in preparing yourself, your family, and your community for unexpected or surprise events such as natural disasters? Are you 13-18 years old?

Then we have an opportunity for you! The My PI (Preparedness Initiative) program trains you in the CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) curriculum and prepares you to return to your community to assist others in preparing. Many skills learned come in handy for everyday living as well!

Curriculum will be delivered online in 1.5 hour learning sessions occurring on Tuesdays for 10 weeks from 3:30-5 pm (12/29/2020-3/2/2021) Additional time will be needed offline for the service project. https://extension.oregonstate.edu/4h/events/mypi-my-preparedness-initiative

A few of our standout Benton County 4-H’ers were recognized for their hard work during the wildfires!
.
.

Posted @withregram • @thesocialinst We'd like to introduce you to three of our heroes!

Meet Abby, Eli, and Lily.

All three have been volunteering tirelessly to help care for displaced animals and livestock evacuated as a result of wildfires in Oregon. They are among the @national4h youth stepping up to provide much-needed aid in their community during an unprecedented wildfire season and have been instrumental in the success of relief efforts during an immense time of need.

We learned of their efforts through Cowgirl 911, a Facebook group launched on September 8 for the purpose of providing transportation and shelter for displaced animals, and within just one week had over 17,000 volunteers rallying to help over 20,000 animals. Cowgirl 911 leaned on volunteers of all ages and backgrounds to leverage resources quickly and in an organized fashion, and serves as a remarkable example of how social media can lift up communities in times of need.

Abby, Eli and Lily are in Corvallis, Oregon volunteering at @bentoncountyfair which is one of the many evacuation sites throughout the state. Throughout the week, we'll be spotlighting their individual efforts more closely with an inside look at how these superstar students are stepping up when others need it the most.

👏👏👏

General information

4-H is an informal, educational youth development program conducted by the Oregon State University Extension Service, as authorized by federal and state statutes. In each county, local Extension staff has the authority to administer the program in accordance with University and Extension policy. Extension staff members work with advisory groups to provide a program that meets the county needs. Members belong to a club/group led by volunteer leaders and take part in club activities such as community service, educational tours, and fun events. In addition to club activities, there is a wide variety of enrichment activities offered at the county, state, national, and international levels. 4-H leaders are trained volunteers who have enrolled with the Extension Service. They present information provided by Extension and Oregon State University. Publications your child receives for use with 4-H projects are developed by Extension faculty or other resource people. 4-H helps young people discover and develop life skills and set personal goals. Involvement in project areas gives members the help needed to improve specific skills and explore new ones. Activities within clubs also introduce members to the importance of helping others through community service.
