Some insightful words from a different perspective, from the Founder and CEO of BridgeEurope.

No. 8: David Rtr

"Born as a son of East-German and Chinese , I heard firsthand about the boundaries that communist regimes placed on their lives - being forced into an occupation, being unable to voice their opinions without being incarcerated, and constantly dreaming about what is behind the “Iron Curtain”. It taught me that many things we take for granted today - freedom of speech, fair trials, and itself - are recent achievements that have long been fought for. We are in charge of ensuring they continue to flourish.

When I first came to UC Berkeley in 2017, I entered a deeply campus , where many felt like they couldn’t voice their true opinions, fearing they would be labeled either as a “ ” or “ ”.
Yet at the same time, I was fascinated by the insatiable desire for betterment of the status quo and the can-do attitude of the Americans around me. And this is why I love being a part of BridgeUSA - a of bright students who strive to tackle polarization and move the world forward.

The developments we see in the political space are phenomena not only prevalent in the US but all over the world. This is why I have devoted the past one and a half years to exporting BridgeUSA’s ideas and attitude to the rest of the world. We need to realize once again that freedom of speech and openness to other ideas are prerequisites for democracy to work, and for bringing the world and its people closer together. I can’t wait to see what we can achieve together over the next few years."

Up first on the new series titled , is one of our own! Read more about it down below.

is a series that catalogs the heart of BridgeUSA, one story at a time.

Up first, we have Chloe Johnston from Bridge-OSU:

"I come from a very divided family, both politically and otherwise, my mom from a SoCal household and my dad, a Floridian home. Though I saw my dad’s family infrequently, my interactions with both sides led to me naturally leaning towards the middle. I’m an outspoken person, but I felt silenced by the pressure of conforming to “family” ideals, and being the youngest, I felt unqualified to voice my opinion.

I stumbled onto Bridge accidentally, wanting to help a friend with student council paperwork turned into taking minutes at meetings, and now, they couldn’t get rid of me even if they tried. The ability to have open and honest conversations about controversial topics with people I respect is something I value immensely. Over the past three years, Bridge has, and continues, to help me feel comfortable in starting conversations and navigating them without starting arguments (at least, that’s the goal).

With Bridge, I’ve learned that there’s power in communicating effectively and developing an understanding for your conversation partner. There’s power in being able to reflect quietly and calmly ask, “but why do you feel this way.” Everyone is feeling unheard because no one is willing to talk. With Bridge, and when I move on, I want to continue to be the person that starts a conversation, whether it be with family or my seat partner on a plane."
