Breaking Records

Physical readiness is demonstrated in many ways. For Cpl. Torianne McRae, she’s taking it to new levels – nine times. (U.S. Marine Corps video by Cpl. Corey A. Mathews)

Some people are brave. Some people want to venture out of their hometown and accomplish feats unimaginable. Candidate Martinez served in the Navy and is now accepting the challenge of leading Marines. Candidate Hine was also in the Navy and she too is accepting the challenge to lead Marines. Should also mention her spouse is an Active Duty enlisted Marine on Recruiting duty and she has a child. Talk about no excuses ! And Candidate Crabtree is leaving Alaska to accept the challenge of leading Marines and being an aviator. So ask yourself this... what excuse do you have to not accept the challenge in leading Marines. #marines #shippers #ocs #alaska #noexcuses #trainhard #pilot #aviator #navynomore #kids #oregon

The President of the United States takes pride in presenting the MEDAL OF HONOR posthumously to

GUNNERY SERGEANT WILLIAM G. WALSH
UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS RESERVE

for service as set forth in the following CITATION:

For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty as Leader of an Assault Platoon, serving with Company G, Third Battalion, Twenty-seventh Marines, Fifth Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces at Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, on 27 February 1945. With the advance of his company toward Hill 362 disrupted by vicious machine-gun fire from a forward position which guarded the approaches to this key enemy stronghold, Gunnery Sergeant Walsh fearlessly charged at the head of his platoon against the Japanese entrenched on the ridge above him, utterly oblivious to the unrelenting fury of hostile automatic weapons and hand grenades employed with fanatic desperation to smash his daring assault. Thrown back by the enemy's savage resistance, he once again led his men in a seemingly impossible attack up the steep, rocky slope, boldly defiant of the annihilating streams of bullets which saturated the area, and despite his own casualty losses and the overwhelming advantage held by the Japanese in superior numbers and dominate position, gained the ridge's top only to be subjected to an intense barrage of hand grenades thrown by the remaining Japanese staging a suicidal last stand on the reverse slope. When one of the grenades fell in the midst of his surviving men, huddled together in a small trench, Gunnery Sergeant Walsh in a final valiant act of complete self-sacrifice, instantly threw himself upon the deadly bomb, absorbing with his own body the full and terrific force of the explosion. Through his extraordinary initiative and inspiring valor in the face of almost certain death, he saved his comrades from injury and possible loss of life and enabled his company to seize and hold this vital enemy position. He gallantly gave his life for his country.

Do not let your mind tell you what you can or cannot do. Your body is capable. Your body is stronger, faster, and more agile than you could even know - until you push yourself past your mental threshold to find out.

Always push for 1 more rep, 1 more minute, 1 more step. There is always more your body can give.

#WarriorWednesday

Col. William A. Eddy served as an officer in the Marine Corps as an intelligence officer during both WWI and WWII. During the Battle of Belleau Wood, then Lt. Eddy and two other men played an instrumental role in the battle when they infiltrated German lines in order to gather intelligence on the movement and placement of German heavy weapons.

Outside of his military service, Colonel Eddy had an esteemed academic career, serving as a professor at both Dartmouth and American University in Cairo. He was also president of both Hobart and William and Smith Colleges.
In addition to his work in academia, Col. Eddy spent two years as the US Minister to Saudi Arabia, worked to develop the CIA, and consulted for Aramco.

Col. Eddy's Marine Corps career and training set the building blocks for a life of service and success. Contact us today to learn more about becoming a Marine Officer and making the most with your life!

68 years ago today, some of the toughest fighting of the Korean War began when the Chinese People's Volunteer Army attacked the United States X Corps at the Chosin Reservoir. A large component of the X Corps was the 1st Marine Division, commander by Major General Oliver P. Smith. Over the next 17 days, U.S. forces would wage a furious battle against a far numerically superior Chinese force. Fighting conditions were some of the most brutal in US history with temperatures as low as -35 degrees. The US fighters became known as The Chosin Few.

On this day in 1943, the battle of Tarawa began in the Pacific. It was the United States first major offensive operation in the Pacific theater, as well as one of the toughest. 1,009 Marines were killed and an additional 2,101 were wounded in the fighting. Among the men wounded was the commanding officer of the Marine ground forces, Colonel David Shoup. Over the three day battle, Shoup routinely and courageously rallied the men under his command, directing attacks on the fortified Japanese positions. For his actions during the battle, Colonel Shoup was awarded the Medal of Honor. He would later go on to serve as the 22nd Commandant of the Marine Corps.
