We were honored to have Alyssa Macy, Chief Operating Officer of the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs, Oregon, as our 2019 commencement speaker. In honor of Indigenous Peoples' Day today, please take a moment to read her address:

Savage Feminism

For Indigenous People’s Day, I challenge everybody to spend 30 minutes on google (or search engine of your choice) learning about the indigenous people and their land that you’re currently occupying. The education system fails both native and non-native people alike, but with a tool like the internet at our disposal, as we mature into young adults, and eventually adults, that becomes an illegitimate excuse for the responsibility we each have to learn about and honor those indigenous nations who are physically dispossessed from their homelands and culture and lifeways to continue the settler colonial state and non-native occupation of our stolen homelands.

I invite people to leave what they’ve learned below so that we can learn together.

On Tuesday May 21 at 6pm, there will be an event at the Centro Cultural César Chávez (691 SW 26th St) titled “Let’s talk about Race, Racism and Mental Health.” This is being coordinated by undergraduate students Ivana Ortega Arriagada, Trevor Garrison, Amanda Roelant, and Camelia Swenson along with the assistance of multicultural and bilingual counselor at CAPS, Andrés Brown, and our professor in Language, Race and Racism in the US: An Introduction (ANTH/ES/WLC 159), Adam Schwartz. This event will focus on facilitating an open dialogue on mental health and its relationship to language, race, and racism. It is open to all, including staff and students to have conversations and share their own truths and experiences around how race and mental health are tightly interwoven in our society through forms of oppression and power. We highly encourage community members to come to participate in this important dialogue.
