Press Release:

Benton County Sheriff’s Office Seeks Help from the Public to Identify Burglary Suspects

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Benton County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) continues to investigate two burglary cases – at the same location – on Independence Highway in Albany, on July 5 and 6, 2020.

BCSO is asking for the public’s assistance to identify five total suspects in two separate vehicles.

The first photos captured a gold, older-model Toyota Corolla, with two suspects. The driver was wearing a red ball cap and black t-shirt. The passenger appeared to be wearing a light-green hooded sweatshirt.

The following day, photos portrayed a dark-colored Honda Pilot, with three male occupants. The first male had a goatee, was wearing a Raider’s ball cap, and had a tattoo of the outline of the state of Oregon on his lower-leg. The next male was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, black shorts, black and white Nike sneakers, and a dark mask. The third male had an American flag bandana around his neck, was wearing red sneakers, and had a mustache.

"If you recognize yourself in these photos, this is a great opportunity to turn yourself in," stated Lt. Duffitt. "Voluntary compliance, on your terms, is better than being arrested at work or possibly with your family at home."

If you can identify any of the suspects or have information to assist the investigator with this case, please email Deputy Williams at [email protected] or call 541-766-6858.

On May 27, 2019, while driving home from a trip with his son, Deputy Brent Iverson suffered what is believed to be a medical event and drove off of Fern Road, near Airport Avenue, in Benton County, the same jurisdiction that he has served for the past 11 years. His son was not injured.
Brent was a dedicated deputy and a great dad. He will be missed.
His brother, Sgt. David Iverson is also a deputy with Benton County Sheriff’s Office.
This is the second time in a week that Benton County Sheriff’s Office has suffered a terrible and incomprehensible loss of a patrol deputy.
Last week Deputy Rick Fontaine died after a medical event caused by a recent cancer diagnosis.
The deaths deeply affected the close knit Sheriff’s Office and has relied on other local police agencies, to include Corvallis Police Department, Albany Police Department, Philomath Police Department and Oregon State Police to assist in law enforcement coverage while the deputies processed their grief.
Their assistance was extremely valued.
At this time no public services have been announced for Deputy Brent Iverson.

Seeking Help from the Public to Identify Suspect

CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Benton County Sheriff’s Office continues to seek assistance from the public in identifying a person of interest for a Criminal Mischief case from January 10, 2019.

An adult male has been seen on camera building a structure in Oregon State University’s McDonald-Dunn Research Forest. The land is located about 10 miles north of the OSU campus.

According to OSU, “the forest is extensively used for university instruction and research. Four distinct forest management themes, even-aged, two-storied and uneven-aged, plus reserved old-growth stands, allow side-by-side comparisons of the effects of implementing these themes.”

The suspect is not only building a cabin-type structure, but also cutting down trees in the research forest to construct it.

We ask anyone with information on this case to contact Cpl. Al Schermerhorn by e-mail at [email protected], or by phone at (541) 766-6874.

Media Release:

Deputies from the Benton County Sheriff’s Office responded to a single vehicle crash into the Willamette River on Highway 20, mile marker 2, just east of Corvallis at 7:30 am on January 21, 2019.

The location was approximately a half mile east of the location where a car had driven off Highway 20 on January 7, 2019.

A witness to the crash immediately called 911.

Multiple public safety agencies rushed to the scene in an attempt to locate survivors, including Benton County Marine Patrol, Linn County Sheriff’s Office, Corvallis Fire, Albany Fire, Corvallis Police and Oregon Department of Transportation. Highway 20 was closed for over 3 hours while the crash was investigated.

The vehicle was fully submerged but visible in the river.

Divers with the Linn County Sheriff’s Office were able to connect a tow cable and the car was pulled from the river.

The driver of the vehicle was the only occupant of the car and he was deceased.

The driver of the car, 77 year old Kenneth T. Leys of Albany, may have had a medical event as he traveled west on Highway 20 towards Corvallis.

Mr. Lays was driving a 2012 Red Chevy Cruze when it left Highway 20 at a high rate of speed, hitting a tree and then going into the Willamette River.

There is no indication of alcohol or drugs as being a factor in the crash.
