Plan for new OSU facility in tsunami zone being questioned by local leaders, professors (FOX 12)
“I think with anything we do, whether that’s driving to the coast or going surfing, you have to be prudent and know the risks, but also the benefits,” MSI Executive Director Jack Barth said. “I think we’re not going into this without eyes closed. We’re going in knowing what the risks are, but we’re choosing to base here for the benefits.”

Have you seen the new artwork installed at Johnson Hall?

The piece is called “Synthesis”. The artist, Allbritton Lee LLC (dba: RE:site) described the piece as follows:

“Synthesis is a suspended sculpture that evokes the harmony between the natural and the technological underlying the fields of chemical, biological and environmental Engineering. The suspended composition of dodecahedrons is characterized by a clustered configuration, along with a singular and smaller group suspended in proximity. The form suggests the process of synthesis on a molecular or cellular scale. The dichroic material enables the work to continually change form, color, and transparency as viewers move around the sculpture.

The installation consists of a suspended sculpture features dodecahedral forms, in various configurations, that are fabricated with a combination of polished aluminum channel and polished steel round bar. Inserted inside the dodecahedral frameworks are facets of ¼” dichroic acrylic panels that taper towards the center in each polyhedron, but stop short of the core. The overall size of the piece is approximately 14’x15’6”.”

"“Tipping Point: Where do you want to put change into action?” was a large-scale reinterpretation of the boardwalk arcade game “coin pusher.” Rather than coins being pushed by a mechanical broom off of a platform, participants place coins, represented by thick, metal washers to vote for change. Tipping Point’s platform was a large, circular disc suspended by a chain and split into six segments: education, housing, neighborhood development, jobs and wages, transportation, and parks and recreation."

A recent experiment by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, a firm of architects, and Oregon State University, shows how strong engineered wood can be. The researchers used CLT in a hybrid form known as concrete-jointed timber. This featured an 11-metre wide CLT floor section with a thin layer of reinforced concrete spread across the surface. Thicker sections of concrete were added where the floor was supported by pillars. It was put into a giant test rig where a powerful hydraulic press pushed with increasing force onto the surface. The researchers wanted to see how the structure moved under load, but kept pressing in order to find its limits. The floor finally began to crack when the load reached a massive 82,000 pounds (37,200kg), around eight times what it was designed to support.
