Harrison County Soil & Water Conservation District

Harrison County Soil & Water Conservation District The purpose of the Harrison Co. In Indiana, a Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) is a governmental sub-division of state government. Harrison Co.

Soil & Water Conservation District, as well as Indiana's other 91 counties, is to provide information about soil, water and related natural resource conservation; identify and prioritize local soil and water resource concerns; and connect landusers to sources of educational, technicial and financial assistance, & to implement conservation practices and technologies. Each county district office ser

ves as a means for all interested people in a county to work for natural resource conservation and development. The district's programs are funded through a variety of sources including county & state appropriations, grants, district revenue generating programs (equipment rental, etc.) and private donations. Although SWCD's in Indiana are based on county lines, the only legal relationship between a district and a county is the provision that a district employee is considered to be an employee of the county in which the employee works. Harrison County Government provides riverboat revenue from Horseshoe Casino for conservation cost-share programs for Harrison Co. SWCD to oversee & administer to the county's landowners.
$100,000 yearly was allocated to the SWCD from the Harrison Co. Commissioners & Council beginning in 2002. The SWCD begin programs for cost-share funding for Livestock Facilites, Hay/Pasture, Field Borders, Forestry, & Cover Crop programs. In 2008, Harrison Co. Government began allocating $150,000 yearly for the SWCD programs. SWCD has various partners that they have cooperative working agreements with, such as; Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), Indiana State Soil Conservation Board, Purdue Cooperative Extension Service, IDNR Division of Soil Conservation & USDA Farm Service Agency

ATTENTION Hoosier Motorists: Spring is here, the green color is back, the birds are out, and so is agricultural equipment. The Indiana State Police and Indiana Department of Agriculture reminds motorists to be patient and note that farm equipment is wide and can take up most of the road. When passing - do so in a safe manner and in a designated passing zone. When initiating a pass to overtake the agriculture equipment in front of your vehicle, ensure that it's not turning left. Farmers will pull over to allow motorists to pass, but be patient as they locate a safe place to do so. And finally, allow plenty of time to get to your destination especially on narrower and congested roadways.
