End of an Era: A Final Message from CPD

To the Citizens of Cosmopolis,

Since 1891, the Cosmopolis Police Department has had the distinct honor of standing watch over this community. For 134 years, our officers have patrolled these streets, shared in your celebrations, and stood by you during your most difficult moments.

As of midnight on December 31, 2025, the Cosmopolis Police Department will officially close its doors.

For me personally, this is a bittersweet moment. Having served this city since October 1998, I have seen firsthand the incredible spirit that makes Cosmopolis home. While I am the last remaining officer standing at the watch, I carry with me the legacy of every man and woman who wore this patch before me.

Why this Change?

The reality of modern policing means that maintaining a small, independent force is no longer financially feasible for our city. However, this transition is not just about a budget, it is about ensuring you receive the highest level of protection possible.
We have negotiated a contract with the Aberdeen Police Department (APD) that provides a professional, high level of service while offering significant cost savings to our community. You are in excellent hands with our neighbors at APD.

Our Deepest Thanks

Our slogan has always been "A Community Partnership." That was never just a phrase on a patrol car; it was a promise. We want to sincerely thank you for the decades of love, support, and trust you’ve placed in us. Fulfilling our mission to protect you has been the greatest privilege of our lives.

Moving Forward: Who to Call

Starting January 1, 2026, all police-related services—including emergency response, animal complaints, concealed pistol permits, and parking issues—will be handled by the Aberdeen Police Department. The APD records office is open 8 AM to 4 PM Monday through Friday to serve you. The APD office is located at 210 E Market Street, Aberdeen, WA 98520. They are also available on-line at https://www.aberdeenwa.gov/214/Police-Department

• Emergencies: Dial 911
• Non-Emergency Needs: Dial 360-533-8765 (GH Dispatch)
• Police Business/Administrative Needs: Dial 360-533-3180 (APD Business Line)

Thank you, Cosmopolis, for the memories and the partnership. It has been an honor to serve you.

With gratitude,

Heath Layman, Chief of Police

🚨 PRESS RELEASE 🚨
Immediate Release: Collision Involving Cosmopolis Police Chief
CITY OF COSMOPOLIS, WA – December 10, 2025 – The Cosmopolis Police Department confirms a serious two-vehicle collision involving the Cosmopolis Chief of Police that occurred this evening in the City of Raymond.

The incident took place at approximately 4:30 PM at the intersection of US 101 and Franklin Street in Raymond, WA.

The Chief of Police was driving a marked patrol vehicle southbound on US 101 when a separate vehicle, traveling east on Franklin Street, failed to yield to traffic at a stop sign.

The striking vehicle abruptly entered the roadway and T-boned the marked police car, resulting in significant damage to both vehicles.

The Chief successfully removed the patrol car from the main roadway and, with the assistance of emergency lights, began directing traffic and rendering aid to the driver of the striking vehicle to prevent a secondary collision until local law enforcement arrived.
The driver of the striking vehicle was transported to a local hospital for evaluation and treatment of injuries sustained in the crash.

The Chief of Police is currently at a local hospital undergoing an X-ray examination for a suspected injury to the wrist.

Due to the location of the collision, the crash investigation is being conducted by the Raymond Police Department. The Cosmopolis Police Department is cooperating fully with their investigation.

We thank the Raymond Police Department for their prompt response and professionalism in handling the scene and the ongoing investigation.

We encourage everyone to clear the drains by your homes and remove, don’t leave behind the debris. As we are expecting another wind/rain event this afternoon, it is especially important to have all drains cleared.

King Tides and Atmospheric Rivers and..... A seal walks into a bar.... This video brought back recent memories of our friend out on Blue Slough Road.

It was a wet, lazy Sunday evening when the baby fur seal waddled into the Sprig + Fern The Meadows craft beer bar in Richmond, at the top of New Zealand’s South Island. Accustomed to seeing animals in the pet-friendly bar, co-owner Bella Evans assumed the visitor was a dog before she took a closer...

Dog Abandoned at Mill Creek Park

This handsome intact male dog was sadly found abandoned at Mill Creek Park on November 18, 2025. We believe he was dumped and are hoping the community can help us piece together what happened.

Do you recognize him? Did you see anything suspicious at Mill Creek Park on that date? Please come forward with any information that could help us identify his owner or anyone involved in abandoning him. Your tips are crucial.

🚨 COSi-MUNITY ALERT: Prepare for a Wet & Windy Weekend! 🚨

The City of Cosmopolis wants to give residents a heads-up about the forecasted weather for Grays Harbor County this weekend (Saturday, Oct 25th – Sunday, Oct 26th). We are expecting heavy rain, showers, and gusty winds.

How You Can Help Our Public Works Team (and Yourself!):

Our crews work hard to manage the city’s drainage system, but a little help from residents goes a long way in preventing localized flooding. Please take a few minutes today to complete these quick tasks:

Clear the Drains: Safely clear the storm drains near your property of leaves, sticks, and debris. A clear drain is an open path for heavy rainwater!

Clear Your Gutters: Ensure your home's gutters and downspouts are clear to direct water flow away from your foundation.

Secure Loose Items: Wind gusts are expected. Please secure or put away anything outdoors that could blow into the street, like trash cans, holiday decorations, or patio furniture. This prevents road hazards and clogged drains.

Drive Safely: Be ready for ponding water on roads. Slow down, use your headlights, and never drive through deep water.

Your preparation efforts make a huge difference in keeping our community safe and preventing flooding. Thank you for being a great partner to your City of Cosmopolis Public Works Department!

Stay warm and dry this weekend!
