Big night at Cossayuna Volunteer Fire Department!!!

On 7/28/26, our crew spent the evening training with our brand‑new battery‑powered tools — a huge upgrade that will make a real difference during emergency responses.

Our sincere condolences to the family members and our brothers and sisters in the Greenwich Fire Department. Grampy was often seen working with us on many mutual aid calls throughout the years and he will truly be missed. Rest in peace Grampy, thank you for your dedication and service to the Greenwich Fire Department and surrounding communities.

It is with heavy hearts that the Greenwich Volunteer Fire Department announces the passing of Lifetime member George “Grampy” Culbertson, a devoted and loved member of the Greenwich Volunteer Fire Department for 54 years.

George joined the Greenwich Volunteer Fire Department in January of 1967 and dedicated more than five decades of service to protecting the Greenwich and surrounding communities.

Throughout his remarkable time with the department , Grampy served as 2nd Assistant Chief, Captain, Vice President, was an honored Lifetime Member and mentor to many young firefighters near and far. He received numerous recognitions, including Firefighter of the Year, the Medal of Merit, the Chief's Award, and the Distinguished Service Award.

Firefighting was truly a family tradition for George. His sons and grandsons proudly followed in his footsteps as members of the department. continuing the legacy of service he inspired.

George was more than a firefighter—he was a mentor, a friend, and "Grampy" to so many in and out of the department. His kindness, dedication, and unwavering commitment left a lasting impact on his family, the Greenwich community, this department, and the entire firefighting community.

We extend our deepest condolences to his loving wife of 62 years Luava, the entire Culbertson family and all who had the privilege of coming across and being impacted by the man we call Grampy.

His legacy of service, leadership, and compassion will never be forgotten.

At 1132 On Thursday June 4th the Cossayuna Volunteer Fire Department along with our 1st alarm mutual aid assignment were dispatched to a reported house explosion with occupants trapped inside. During response Cossayuna command was advised that it was a confirmed house explosion with one male occupant unaccounted for. Upon arrival the male subject was coming out of the front door with the assistance of a neighbor. Command confirmed with the subject that everyone was out of the house except for 2 dogs. Due to the amount of damage to the structure and the amount of fire involved command made the decision to fight the fire in a defensive manor only and a 2nd alarm was struck. The homeowners were evaluated on scene by medical personal and were transported to a local hospital for precautionary evaluation. They were released later the following morning. Units operated on scene until the early hours of the morning, with the last units leaving shortly after 4am. Washington county fire investigation team and the fire department returned to the scene at 8am to conduct a thorough investigation and extinguish any remaining hot spots. The investigation concluded that the explosion was due to a buildup of propane gasses in the basement of the structure which were most likely ignited by the contact points of the water pressure pump switch.

Argyle Fire and EMS, Greenwich Fire and Easton Greenwich EMS, Hebron Fire, Salem Fire, Shushan Fire, Middle Falls Fire, Washington County Sheriffs, New York State Police, Washington County Fire Investigators, and Washington County Department of Public Safety.

Last night at our monthly meeting we welcomed home our own Evan Smith. Evan just finished up his tour in the middle east with the U.S. Army. We are very glad to have him return home safe and sound, and look forward to having him back around the firehouse. Welcome home Evan and thank you for your service.

Today Cossayuna Volunteer Fire Department, Inc. kicks off their 2026 Annual Giving Campaign. Last night our firefighters along with Hebron Fire drilled on vehicle stabilization and extraction. It was a great night of refresher training focused on response preparedness, safety, and efficiency for MVA scenes.
