The Inland Empire Labor Council, a labor organization that defends and fights for the rights of all working class families, strongly condemns the blatant ignorant statements expressed by LA City Council President Nury Martinez and her fellow Councilmembers Kevin Deleon, Gil Cedillo and LA County Federation of Labor President Ron Herrera. The statements made by the Councilmembers that specifically attacked the child of a fellow Councilmember Mike Bonin, the African and Indigenous/Oaxacan communities are a clear display of unexcused ignorance.

As we continue to chip away at institutional racism in our communities, we know how important it is to have elected’s with integrity and morals. Participating in conversations of gerrymandering to keep themselves in elected positions is not acceptable in any shape or form, no matter who you are.

The IELC has no jurisdiction over the LA Federation of Labor, but we’re confident that the affiliates/delegates will do the right thing and hold the integrity of Labor in the forefront. In regards to the elected officials involved, as their civic duty to their constituents, they should also do the right thing and step down.

As Labor we need not to be sidetracked by the ignorant decisions of a few and continue to focus on building collective power for the working class.
