CSX & Town of Cottage City Partner to Protect Residents

The Town of Cottage City is proud to partner with CSX to help protect residents who live along the railroad corridor, particularly those on Cottage Terrace, a residential street located adjacent to the CSX right-of-way.

Following a recent storm that caused a tree to damage a resident’s home on Cottage Terrace, the Town reached out to CSX to request assistance with pruning and removing trees along the railroad right-of-way. CSX responded, and this past week, its contractors spent an entire week carefully pruning and removing trees along Cottage Terrace that posed potential safety concerns to nearby residents and properties.

With the increasing frequency and intensity of severe storms, proactive tree maintenance is an important part of protecting our community. Our goal is simple: take action today to help prevent a tragedy tomorrow. We certainly do not want to receive a phone call after a future storm knowing that a dangerous tree could have been removed beforehand and potentially prevented serious injury, property damage, or even loss of life.

The Town of Cottage City sincerely thanks CSX, Michael Twidle, and James Bennett for taking the time to listen to our concerns and work with the Town to help keep the residents of Cottage Terrace and the surrounding Cottage City community safe.

This partnership demonstrates what can happen when a municipality and a major railroad work together with a shared commitment to public safety and protecting our community.

Pursuant to Resolution No. 2026-24 of the Cottage City Commission, and consistent with Charter §§ 66 and 67, Town Code § 9-4, and Town Code § 6-9, the Town of Cottage City hereby gives notice of the following temporary street closure. The Chief of Police may also erect barricades under Town Code § 6-11 if a local and temporary emergency arises that cannot safely be dealt with in any other manner.

PURPOSE. CSX Transportation, Inc., or its contractors, will conduct tree pruning and removal operations along the CSX railroad right-of-way adjacent to Cottage Terrace. The work requires heavy equipment, including a crane.

STREETS CLOSED. The entire length of Cottage Terrace (Municipal Route Nos. 0030 and 0031) along the CSX railroad right-of-way within the corporate limits of the Town. Portions of Shepherd Street (Municipal Route No. 0050) and Bunker Hill Road (Municipal Route No. 0020) may also be closed as determined by the Town Manager and the Chief of Police.

DATES AND TIMES. Beginning 12:01 a.m. on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, and ending 6:00 p.m. on Friday, September 4, 2026. Dates and hours are subject to change depending on weather, rail-flagging, and field conditions.

TRAFFIC AND ACCESS. Closed segments will be closed to through traffic and to on-street parking. Local access for residents and emergency-vehicle access will be maintained to the extent practicable, as determined by the Cottage City Police Department and personnel conducting the work. Barricades, signage, and traffic-control devices will be placed in accordance with the Maryland Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.

SHUTTLE SERVICE. The Town of Cottage City is offering a 24 HOUR On-Call Shuttle Service from September 1 through September 4, 2026, for residents affected by the CSX Road Closure. Shuttle transportation will be available to and from residents’ vehicles for those who need assistance accessing their vehicles during the road closure. This service is available only to residents living within the impacted CSX area. Call 240-544-8725 to schedule.

COMPLIANCE. All persons must obey police barricades, signage, and traffic-control devices. Failure to do so may constitute a violation of Town Code §§ 6-9, 6-11, and 9-4.

On Friday, September 25, 2026, Cottage City will have the honor of hosting attendees of the America in Bloom Symposium. These visitors will be coming from communities across the United States, and we want to put our best foot forward and show them the wonderful community we call home.

This is the 25th Anniversary of America in Bloom, and we are excited to be part of this special occasion. This year’s symposium is being hosted by communities throughout Prince George’s County, with each community bringing its own personality, passion, and commitment to creating beautiful places to live.

We want Cottage City to shine like the diamond that we are!

As we prepare for our visitors, we are asking residents to help us with some simple housekeeping around your homes and properties:

Please cut your grass and keep your property looking neat.

If trees, bushes, or other vegetation from your property are blocking or overhanging sidewalks, please prune them back.

If you see trash or litter on the ground, please pick it up.

If you have open storage or unwanted items on your property,
please begin making a plan to properly discard or remove them.

Take a few moments to look around your property and take care of those small details that can make a big difference.

It is the little things that matter.

Starting our housekeeping work early will give us plenty of time to make Cottage City look its very best when our guests arrive. We want visitors from around the country to see a community that is clean, welcoming, proud, and cared for by its residents.

🌎 Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration

Friday, September 18, 2026 • 6:30 PM

Come celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with us as we honor the rich history, culture, traditions, and contributions of Hispanic and Latino communities in the United States!

Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated annually from September 15 through October 15. The observance began in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week, established by President Lyndon B. Johnson to recognize the contributions of Hispanic Americans. In 1988, the celebration was expanded to a full month.

The month begins on September 15 because it coincides with the independence anniversaries of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Mexico celebrates its independence on September 16, while Chile celebrates on September 18.

This special gathering is an opportunity to learn more about this history while coming together as neighbors. Enjoy good food, meaningful conversation, cultural appreciation, and the chance to meet and connect with members of our community.

Cottage City Day 2026: Celebrate Your Heritage

As we prepare for Cottage City Day 2026, our theme, “Celebrate Your Heritage,” feels especially meaningful as we celebrate America’s 250th anniversary.

America has always been a great melting pot—a nation shaped by people from every corner of the world, each bringing their own traditions, stories, cultures, and experiences. We all have a heritage to celebrate, and each of our individual stories adds another beautiful thread to the fabric of our community.

Here in Cottage City, our motto is “United in Diversity.” Those words remind us that what makes our community special is not that we are all the same, but that we come together while honoring the many backgrounds and traditions that make us who we are.

Tomorrow, I hope we can all pause for a moment to celebrate our own heritage and appreciate the heritage of our neighbors. Let us share our stories, embrace our differences, and recognize the richness that each of us brings to Cottage City.
