Thank you to all the folks that came out for last night’s Science on Tap event, presented by Marjory House!

We know the weather is lovely, and lots of you have gardening to do, but we appreciate you coming out to learn about lunar rhythms and how the moon can influence plants, animals, and even fermentation. Thank you to Marjory and the good people of the Axe & Fiddle for another great Science on Tap!

Purple EAB traps are popping up around your watershed.

Emerald ash borer is an invasive beetle that poses a direct threat to the ash tree populations of the Willamette Valley. This bad news bug was first spotted in Oregon back in 2022, when an infestation was discovered in Forest Grove, in Washington County, and they're on the move.

Right now, partners across Oregon are installing purple prism traps in and around ash trees to monitor infestations and detect the spread of EAB. While emerald ash borer has not been detected in Lane or Douglas County yet, your Coast Fork Willamette Watershed Council is taking part.

This week we're hanging purple prisms in and around Cottage Grove and Creswell, and hoping that this won't be the year we have a positive identification. The traps will be checked in about 8 weeks, and then again when they're taken down in mid-September.

In the mean time, the best way you can help slow the spread of EAB is to never move firewood. This invasive pest is primarily spread through the transportation of infested wood, so this camping season, please make sure to buy all firewood locally.

Happy World Bee Day!
This year's theme is “Bee together for people and the planet: A partnership that sustains us all".
Did you know that approximately 500 species of bees live in Oregon? In addition to the honey bee which was introduced to the U.S. some 400 years ago, there are a wide variety of very important social and solitary bees that are native to Oregon.
Additionally, many native Oregon plant species rely on buzz pollination in order to release their pollen. Bumblebees and some carpenter and solitary bees are vital for sonication, but honey bees cannot provide this essential pollination method.

Join us tomorrow, Saturday, May 9th, for the 10th annual Bikes to Blooms wildflower event!

This year, Bikes to Blooms is hosted in partnership with the Coast Fork Willamette Watershed Council, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Bureau of Land Management, Walama Restoration Project, Native Plant Society of Oregon, Eugene Chapter of the North American Butterfly Association, Willamette Resources and Educational Network (WREN), and Dorena Genetic Resource Center.

What to Expect:
Discover spring wildflowers in bloom at Bikes to Blooms on Saturday, May 9th from 8 am-1 pm at Bake Stewart Park! With a local expert as your guide, you’re invited to explore a rare, remnant prairie and oak habitat along Dorena Lake and the Row River bike trail. Bikes to Blooms is a free event featuring activities for families and nature enthusiasts, including a morning bird walk, guided and self-guided wildflower walks, and educational booths hosted by local organizations.

Travel southeast of Cottage Grove and experience this ecologically valuable and scenic landscape and see the southern Willamette Valley in bloom. May is bike month! This a great opportunity to enjoy the Row River bike path, and parking is limited, so consider bringing your wheels!

This is a sensitive environment, especially during the wildflower season. Please be mindful that any pets present need to be on-leash and well-behaved at all times.
