Nature trays are a great way to bring the outdoors in through sensory play! Your child can build new vocabulary and learn about the world around us.
Here’s a simple guide to try at home:
Materials:
• Tray or shallow container: A basket, wooden tray, or even a shoebox lid works great.
• Collected nature items: Leaves, pinecones, rocks, acorns, flowers, shells, sticks—whatever catches your child's eye outside.
• Magnifying glass (optional): Adds an element of discovery as kids examine small details up close.
What to do:
1. Take a nature walk: Encourage your child to gather a variety of items from your backyard, a park, or while out on a walk. Talk about what they notice—textures, colors, shapes.
2. Arrange items: Help your child lay out their finds on the tray. They can group items by category (e.g., all leaves together) or create a mini scene, like a forest or beach.
3. Observe and explore: Use the materials to discuss cycles and seasons. Talk about why leaves fall, how seeds grow, or even turn it into a literacy activity by telling stories or reading books about what you found.
4. Keep it new: Rotate the objects every few days or each time you go out, so it’s always changing and different!
A nature tray is a perfect way to connect kids with the world around them—what can you find around your world to create a nature tray?

Your child is already "reading!"
Share a photo of your child recognizing words!

Introducing environmental print—the words they see around them on signs, packages, and labels is an important first step in learning to read!
Have you noticed how your child recognizes a favorite snack, logo, or store name?

Opportunities to read are all around—at home, in the car, or out and about in our community. Share a photo of your child recognizing words!

No ECFE , Drop-In Play, and Preschool classes for MEA break...we can't wait to see you again next week!

October has been filled with beautiful weather to enjoy outside! This long weekend is a great opportunity to bring the outdoors in.
Create sensory nature experiences to last all season long.

Time outside has been shown to reduce stress, boost mood, and improve concentration—not just for kids, but for parents too! When your child explores hands-on, they’re using problem-solving skills, understanding directions, and categorizing the world around them.
Show us how you and your family enjoy nature play!

South Washington County Schools Community Education

Community Education is an opportunity for local citizens, community schools, agencies and institutions to become active partners in addressing education and community concerns. Community Education embraces these beliefs: education is a lifelong process, everyone in the community shares a responsibility for the mission of educating all members of the community and citizens have a right and responsibility to link the needs of the resources to improve their community.

South Washington County Schools Community Education strives to serve the community by offering a variety of opportunities for learners of all ages including: Early Childhood, Youth Enrichment and Athletics, School Age Care, Volunteering, Adult Enrichment Courses, Credit Recovery, GED and Adult English classes, Senior Connections, district facility use and more. We invite all community members to join us in the pursuit of lifelong learning, personal development and active citizenship.
