Being a volunteer firefighter is more than just running into burning buildings and pulling people from car crashes. Sundays are for truck checks. Every week we go through each truck to test and verify all equipment is where it should be and in good working order. We take great pride in ensuring everything is clean and ready to go when needed.

Today's crew included one of our most senior members, Paul with 28 years and one of our newest, Lauren at 2 months.

***08/18/26 Update from Dane County - their contractor pushed the start date of the County Hwy BB bridge closure to Monday, August 31st so that will be the official start date of this project.**

The County Hwy BB bridge closure is set to begin Monday, August 17th.

This closure is expected to last for 2-3 months as the bridge is replaced on County Hwy BB over the Koshkonong Creek in the Town of Cottage Grove.

Here is a link to the project page for full details: https://highway-projects-countyofdane.hub.arcgis.com/pages/cth-bb-b

During this project, the Town will be posting 10-ton weight limits on Baxter Road, Ridge Road south of CTH BB, and Uphoff Road to discourage heavy traffic from cutting through. The Highway Superintendent will also be working with area farmers and local businesses during this closure. Access to adjacent properties will be maintained during construction.

Do you have a monitored fire alarm system in your home or business? Have you registered it with the Village yet?
If not, you can easily do so here: https://www.vi.cottagegrove.wi.gov/FormCenter/Police-Department-5/Alarm-Registration-74

Cottage Grove Fire Department was recently granted use of a house that is scheduled for demolition to use for training purposes. We will hold many trainings, covering a wide range of topics over the next few months, leading up to a final burn down later this fall.

This month we focused on rural water operations. In this scenario, our engine arrives on scene and immediately pulls a hose line as crews enter to search for and extinguish the fire. Soon after, a tender (water truck) hooks up a supply line to relay pump to the engine for a continuous water supply. The tender also drops a portal water tank that additional tenders will discharge their water into before returning to the nearest hydrant to refill and repeat.

We are extremely grateful to the property owners for allowing us to use this house for an extended period of time. This type of real world environment allows our members a unique opportunity that training props cannot replicate.

Stay tuned as we share future training updates.

If this looks interesting to you, we are always on the lookout for additional volunteers. You can learn more and apply at www.cottagegrovefire.org

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Structure Fire, 3000 block County Highway BN, Town of Pleasant Springs

At 2:55 AM on Friday, April 24, 2026, Cottage Grove Fire Department, was dispatched to a report of a shed on fire in the 3000 block of County Highway BN in the Town of Pleasant Springs.

While enroute to the scene, additional updates indicated the fire had spread to an adjacent barn and was threatening the residence. With that information and fire visible from Highway 12/18 over a mile away, Car 1 immediately called for a Box Alarm for additional resources. Upon arriving on scene, both a small shed and large machine barn were completely engulfed in flames and approaching a home that was 15 feet away. Cottage Grove Engine 3 arrived moments later and quickly deployed 2 hose lines and a deck gun to begin fire attack and defensive measures to protect the home. All residents had safely evacuated the home.

Cottage Grove Tender 1 arrived shortly after and began supplying water to Engine 3 while setting up a port-a-tank to begin rural water operations. Additional support from several neighboring departments arrived with more engines, water tenders, and personnel. Approximately 35,000 gallons of water was used to extinguish the fire.

Although the shed and barn are a total loss, we are extremely proud of our crew’s effort to protect the home which received only minor damage from radiant heat. A lightning strike is suspected to be the cause of the fire, with a loss estimate of $200,000 to the structure and equipment within. No firefighters or residents were injured during the incident.

We would like to thank Deerfield Fire, McFarland Fire, Cambridge Fire, Stoughton Fire, Sun Prairie Fire, Maple Bluff Fire, Deer-Grove EMS, and Dane County Sheriff’s for their assistance.
