Our page is designed to help you learn more about your police department, stay informed about community events and public safety information, and strengthen the connection between our officers and the people we proudly serve. We encourage you to take a few minutes to explore our posts, and we always welcome your feedback, questions, and comments. The Cottage Grove Police Department was established

in December 1982 through an intergovernmental agreement to provide law enforcement services to both the Village and Town of Cottage Grove. On January 1, 2015, the department transitioned to become a village-only police department, continuing its commitment to providing exceptional service to our community. Today, the members of the Cottage Grove Police Department are dedicated to building strong community partnerships and delivering professional, compassionate, and responsive police services. We believe the best public safety outcomes are achieved by working alongside our residents, businesses, schools, and community organizations to identify concerns, solve problems, and improve quality of life. Our mission is to prevent crime, reduce the fear of crime, and enhance the safety and well-being of everyone who lives, works, and visits Cottage Grove through proactive policing, community engagement, and a commitment to excellence. The department is comprised of a Chief, Lieutenant, three Sergeants, one Detective, 14 Police Officers (including our K-9 Officer), a full-time Administrative Services Manager, and a full-time Administrative Assistant. We look forward to connecting with you and serving the Cottage Grove community.

🚲🛴 E-Bike and Scooter Safety Reminder 🛴🚲

As students head back to school, the Police Department would like to remind riders and parents about the importance of safely operating e-bikes, scooters, and similar devices. We have received several concerns regarding unsafe operation throughout the Village and want to ensure everyone understands the laws, ordinances, and safety risks associated with these devices.

⚠️ Attention Parents: With the start of the school year, more children will be using e-bikes and scooters to travel to and from school, visit friends, and get around the community. Please take time to discuss safe riding practices and local ordinances with your children. These devices can reach significant speeds and, when operated improperly, can result in serious injuries to riders, pedestrians, and motorists.

Please remember:

✅ Wear a helmet. Helmets can significantly reduce the risk of serious injury in the event of a crash.

✅ One rider per device. E-bikes and scooters are designed for a single operator unless specifically manufactured for additional passengers.

✅ Follow all traffic laws and Village ordinances. Riders must operate these devices responsibly and safely.

✅ Stay alert and be aware of your surroundings. Excessive speed, distracted riding, and unsafe maneuvers create unnecessary risks for everyone.

✅ Use caution around schools, crosswalks, sidewalks, and areas with increased pedestrian traffic.

The Village has ordinances regulating the operation of e-bikes, scooters, and similar devices. Riders who do not comply with these ordinances may be subject to enforcement action, including the issuance of citations.

📋 A copy of the applicable Village ordinance is included below for your reference.

Ch 121 [HISTORY: Adopted by the Village Board of the Village of Cottage Grove 5-18-2026 by Ord. No. 10-2026. Amendments noted where applicable.] The following definitions shall apply in the interpretation and enforcement of this chapter: BICYCLE Shall have t

We're excited to introduce Officer Lily Meinen, our new School Resource Officer!

Officer Meinen has been serving with the Cottage Grove Police Department since 2024. Before joining our department, she worked as a police officer for the Village of Baldwin, Wisconsin.

She is excited to connect with students and staff and become a familiar face in our schools.

Fun Fact: Officer Meinen loves a good game of pickleball!

Be sure to say hello and help us welcome Officer Meinen to this important role in our community!

SCHOOL STARTS SEPTEMBER 1! 📚🚌

It’s hard to believe, but the first day of school is right around the corner! As our students head back to school, we’re asking everyone to slow down, pay attention, and watch out for our kids.

🚶‍♀️ Watch for kids walking and biking to school. Give them plenty of space and be prepared for unexpected movements.

🚌 Watch for school buses and STOP when required. Passing a stopped school bus can result in a fine of more than $600!

🚗 Please be patient with the new traffic pattern at Cottage Grove Elementary. It may take some time for everyone to get used to the changes. Slow down, follow the signs and directions, and give yourself a little extra time during drop-off and pick-up.

Let’s work together to make sure our students, families, teachers, and everyone on the road have a safe and successful school year!

Welcome back, students! Let’s have a great year!

We know the closures and construction can be frustrating, and we truly appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding while this project moves forward.

Please continue to use extra caution when traveling through the area to help keep your fellow motorists and construction workers safe.

Thank you for your continued patience and cooperation
