What an incredible day we had at our Jackson County Spring Cleanup this year! The past two years we had so much rain, but this year was an absolutely beautiful sunny day, and we couldn't have been more thankful for that!

We collected more trash than ever this year, initially filling 20 bins with waste, but unbelievably even that wasn’t enough, and we had to make a temporary trash pile on the ground and call in reinforcements. Once it was all collected, we filled a grand total of 30 bins this year, a record for this event!

(We know, getting excited about trash seems a little strange, but when you realize that all that trash will be properly and responsibly disposed of in a landfill, and not potentially thrown down a ravine somewhere, we tend to celebrate a little.)

We extend deep, heartfelt gratitude this year, as we had SO MUCH support! This event takes a lot of planning and tons of communication and cooperation on the day of, and everyone involved showed up with smiles on their faces and such a willingness to help!

We had many extra volunteers this year, including self-reporting community volunteers, and with all the extra trash, everyone was extra appreciated! This group includes 16 fine individuals from Day Report and Hope House Ministries, who showed up with energy and smiles to support us with service hours. They even came back and helped us clean the remaining debris from the ground after the large trash pile was removed. They were an absolutely great group to work with, and we look forward to working with them again in future events.

We’d like to thank our event partner, Rumpke, who not only provided our bins, but also great service support. They have been absolutely wonderful to work with over the last several years and were quick to provide additional, desperately needed bins this year. Thank you!

On that note, a special “Thank You” is also owed to Wood County Waste, who bailed us out by providing the final extra bins we needed to get this event all wrapped up. They have helped us out in a pinch in the past, as well, and were again eager to lend us a helping hand. We thank you!

Big big thanks go out to Francis Brothers, who so generously donated their time, fuel, and equipment on not only the day of the event, but throughout the week after, helping to clean up the pile on the ground and putting it into the extra dumpsters we ordered. Their partnership this past 12 years has been instrumental, and we couldn't do this without them!

We also thank Sheetz of Ripley and Epworth United Methodist for powering us through the morning with donated coffee and pastries the day of the cleanup.

Last, but not least, this event would not be possible without your very own Jackson County Solid Waste Authority, with financial support provided by the Jackson County Commission. The volunteers of the JCSWA, with the employees of the Jackson County Recycling Center, collaborate each year to put this initiative into action, and they are proud and honored to serve their community by helping to keep our county clean.

Another successful county cleanup is in the books, and we look forward to hearing any feedback you may have and serving you again in 2027!

JACKSON COUNTY-WIDE TRASH CLEANUP DAY

📢📢 TIRES ***NOT*** ACCEPTED AT THIS EVENT📢📢 (tires will be accepted the following Saturday, same location on April 18th from 9am-3pm)

Saturday April 11, 2026

8:00am to 3:00pm

County Fairgrounds on Rt. 62 near Cottageville

Residents are encouraged to take full advantage of this opportunity as participation will determine future need for the event. The usual cost to hold this one-day cleanup is approximately $15K, including a significant amount of volunteer time to organize and coordinate, so donations will be gladly accepted to help offset these costs.
On Saturday, April 11, 2026, (rain or shine) at the County Fairgrounds near Cottageville, the Jackson County Solid Waste Authority, with funding support from the Jackson County Commission, will hold a one-day County-Wide Trash Cleanup event for Jackson County Residents (not commercial businesses) to dispose of the following:
• Broken or discarded appliances, (Freon/refrigerant removal will be available for discarded AC and refrigerators),
• All types of junk, refuse, and generally all sorts of trash and unwanted items.
• Additionally, Goodwill Industries of Kanawha Valley will be present to take gently used clothing, shoes, and furniture that may still have some useful life. (Goodwill Industries uses money raised from sale of donated items to help people with barriers to employment, learn skills to find competitive employment.)

• Recyclable Items can be dropped off at the Solid Waste Authority’s Recycle Center located ½ mile NW of the County Fairgrounds on Rt #62.
 Cardboard
 Aluminum
 Steel
 Plastics bottles, Plastic containers ( #1 thru #7 plastics) and plastic bags
 All types of paper (newspaper, white paper, magazines, etc.)

***** The used TIRE collection will NOT be available during this event, but will be held separately at the County Fairgrounds on Saturday, April 18, 2026, from 9:00am to 3:00pm

Jackson Countians, with proof of residency, can drop off items April 11, between the hours of 8:00am and 3:00pm, (again…rain or shine). NOTE: THERE WILL BE NO ADMITTANCE PRIOR TO THE 8:00AM START TIME. The drop site at the Fairgrounds will be set up in stations for the various discarded items including one station for Goodwill items, another for trash, another for steel and appliances. It is requested that items be pre-organized/sorted (the best you can) to accommodate easy drop off at each of the stations, so the flow of traffic is not interrupted or slowed.

Items NOT being accepted for this event include: Tires, Junk Cars; Yard Waste; Free Liquids, Paint, Gasoline, Flammable or Hazardous Materials; Fluorescent Bulbs; Explosives, Ammunition, Radioactive Materials; or Medical Waste; etc.

IMPORTANT NOTE: This event is organized, supervised, and performed by volunteers. However, this year we may be short of volunteers to help with unloading your vehicles/trailers and suggest where possible, bring help to assist with unloading.
Let us all do our part to make Jackson County trash and litter-free by cleaning up our properties and bringing those unwanted items to the County Fairgrounds on Saturday April 11. If you do not have a complete load of trash on your own but you know of areas (along the roadside, in the creek, etc.) where trash needs removed and properly disposed, be a Good Samaritan and bring those items in as well!

Many of you will be excited to hear, the Jackson County Recycling Center has outlined a list (below) of acceptable recyclable materials that can be received at our Cottageville location. These are broken down into three main parts:

(1)Plastics
(2)Cardboard
(3)Electronics

If it is not listed, we do not accept that type of material.

This can be used as a guide when separating your materials, to help keep our initiative as efficient as possible.

As always, thank you for recycling!!

Exciting news for our recycling center! We received grant funds recently towards the purchase of a new bailer for our facility. We have now purchased and received that bailer and this will aid in our ability to increase efficiency with recyclable materials.

Thank you for your continued support as a community to help reduce, reuse, and recycle! By bringing your recyclables to our Cottageville facility, we are able to keep a significant amount of waste from reaching a landfill!

Another successful Jackson County Spring Cleanup in the books, and as the day closes, we are just so thankful for this opportunity to serve our county. It turned out to be an absolutely beautiful day, and we get to see and interact with so many friendly faces, and it really is a joy to put this event on each year.

We finished the day with 21 dumpsters packed completely full of unwanted material that will get properly disposed of at the landfill, 3 entire tractor trailers full of tires that will be recycled or reused, and 3 bins full of recyclable steel and metal.

We want to thank several groups for making this event possible. The Jackson County Solid Waste Authority is the group that coordinates and works this event, and they, with the help of the Jackson County Commission, also fund the event. We'd like to thank the Jackson County Recycling Center for their hard work throughout the day, local volunteers, and of course the infamous Francis Brothers Excavating, without which, this event wouldn't be possible.

A special thanks goes out to the selfless and sweet local FFA kiddos who came out and volunteered their weekend to do litter cleanup at the end of the day, and to whom we credit the very clean and spotless aftermath of an otherwise messy day in the mud!

And last but not least, we thank you, the public. Yes, we're taking your trash haha, but in return you are giving us smiles, patience, gratitude, and we really appreciate that more than you know!

It's a long day, it takes lots of effort getting it together, but the kindness and thanks from our fellow Jackson Countians makes it all worth the effort.

Cheers to 2025, and we'll see you next year at our 2026 Annual Jackson County Spring Cleanup!

It's that time of year again! The Jackson County Solid Waste Authority, along with the Jackson County Commission will be hosting the Annual Jackson County Spring Cleanup!!!!

We know last year the rain got us into a pretty swampy situation, but rain or shine, this event will go on! We look forward to seeing all Jackson Countians on April 12th from 8am until 3pm.

Please be respectful of the times, as the volunteers who put this event on need time in the mornings to have team members in place and prepared to help you with your no longer needed belongings. We want to ensure a smooth and timely cleanup this year, and allowing all hands on deck to get in safely and set up before early birds arrive will help greatly with that!

We enjoy putting this event on, and we love seeing all the smiling faces and all the friendly conversations! Please read all further details below. Questions can either be answered by the Jackson County Commission office at 304-373-2222 or by sending a fb message to the Jackson County Recycling Center. See you all soon!

📣 ‼️ Public Service Announcement‼️ 📣

The Jackson County Solid Waste Authority, along with the Jackson County Recycling Center, has made the unfortunate decision to shut down the remote Kenna recycling site until further notice.

We are so very grateful for the level of interest in this location, but until we have the ability to be able to keep up with site, it is in the community's best interest for it to be closed.

We would very much appreciate your continued recycling efforts at our main Cottageville location on Rt. 62.

Though the weather threw a slight wrench in our normal operation, we still managed to have a very successful 2024 Jackson County Cleanup. We thank each and every one of you that came to support the project.

We'd like to say a great big thank you to Rumpke, our new partner in this cleanup, for providing all of our containers. They have been absolutely wonderful to work with, and we look forward to working with them more in the future. Thank you to our recycling center employees and our Jackson County Solid Waste Authority members for volunteering and putting this project on. Another big thank you to B&G Heating and Cooling for refrigerant collection, the Jackson County Commission for their monetary support, and of course this project wouldn't even be possible without the efforts of Francis Brothers and family for providing their time, equipment, and hard work in the collection process.

For those of you who came to bring us your unwanted materials, we also want to thank you as well. We do this for the good of the community, to keep our community clean, and we thank you for all your patience with us, and for being positive, and appreciative. It makes it all worth doing to hear your gratitude and encouragement!

We hope to see you again in 2025!
